When they say Shelf, they mean it!

Shelf Road has some grand exposures that aren't for the faint of heart, but the scenery is spectacular. We drove it from Canon City to Victor.

We have traveled this several times. We often see big horn sheep and other wildlife. It is a very rough, narrow road. Be sure to drive slowly and toot your horn around curves if you can't see ahead. We think it is well worth visiting. Strongly recommend 4WD.

My wife and myself have spent a little over a week in Colorado. We have been to Rocky Mountain National Park, drove up to Mt. Evans, drove across Independence Pass, visited Royal Gorge, took a hot air balloon ride, drove up the Pikes Peak and 3 days worth of attractions in the Colorado Springs area. But, the Shelf road combined... More

Saw the signs for the golden belt byway and took it. Awesome drive with little traffic which was a refreshing change. Great views, no cell service and had to keep your speed down. A great change of pace from normal, hectic, wired city life.

We saw a variety of wildlife along the way and lots of beautiful and different scenery. This is now my 2nd favorite road to car hike upon. We had an all-wheel drive Honda CRV and driving it was a breeze. Great fun!

We decided just in case the road was rough we would take the truck. The sign says 4 wheel drive or high clearance vehicles only. I think you could make it if your tires are good and your car newer. Most of the road is smoother dirt road but there are areas that have rivets from the rain runoff so... More

This road is very narrow in places. It is just a track, unpaved and not for timid drivers. However, it is nowhere near as 'hardcore' as some reviews make it out to be. I preferred Phantom Canyon Road, but both have spectacular views and are well worth 'going country'

I am nervous when it comes to heights but my family is thirsty for adventure, reluctantly we made this drive from Cripple Creek to Canon City. Narrow gravel road and steep cliffs without guard rails for a thrilling drive with a fantastic scenery!

We were headed to Cripple Creek from Canon City, took the route my map was telling us to take. We had no idea what we were in for!!! If we had known what to anticipate I would have been more comfortable and enjoyed the scenery, however we had no clue what was to come! We were all packed into our... More

Gorgeous scenery on this well-maintained gravel road. This is a must while in Cripple Creek. We traveled down to Canon City & then came back on Phantom Road. Yes, it's narrow but there are areas where you can pass or let cars pass you. There was never a problem with other vehicles on the road & you don't need a... More
