This is such a beautiful drive and ends up in either Cripple Creek or Victor. A lot of history up and down this roadway and shelf road will test your abilities to handle heights. Super narrow roadway in places. But well worth the trip....just take your time and enjoy.

This road is a mountainous one-lane unpaved gravel/dirt road. There are a few pull offs, so that another car can get by. But there are no guard rails and huge drop-offs. You must be very comfortable and safe driving these type of roads. If you are, then this is a must see.

We drove from Canon City to Cripple Creek and that was a beautiful drive. We had a nice prime rib dinner at the newest casino in town and decided to drive back on Shelf Road. The entrance on that end is right outside of Cripple Creek but of course we missed it and drove to Victor and had to go... More

We read the reviews and were wary, but decided to try it anyway in a 4WD truck. First of all, this road is on the narrow side, but it's like most of the side roads--packed gravel/dirt. Secondly, I think the part of Shelf Road alluded to by another reviewer has been closed since 2012 and is chained off. This drive... More

This is the only way to see Colorado, off the black top. The road may be a little scary for a flatlander but if you drive slow you will be fine. If you go north to south you avoid many of the scary spots by staying in your lane hugging the inside wall. This being part of a scenic byway,... More

Terrifying, breathtaking, raw rugged beauty at its finest. We are four "seniors" who vacation together, and this was an unexpected heart-stopping experience on our way to do a little gaming in Cripple Creek. We are Texans/Louisianans with scant experience in the ways of the Rockies. We had turned over the trip details to our trusty GPS lady and were just... More

Had planned to take the easier Phantom Canyon Road, but it was closed due to flood damage. We were driving a Kia Sportage SUV and had no problems whatsoever. We only met a couple of cars and lucked out so that we were able to pass each other with no problem. It is a little scary for the faint of... More

One of the highlights of our driving tour of Colorado. Breath-taking scenery, and we were lucky enough to have a bear trot across the road in front of us, and then watch as he/she sat and sniffed the air. After doing some research we decided to drive north on the Phantom Canyon Road, and south on Shelf road, to ensure... More

We were in a F250, but it wasn't 4 wheel drive, and we did just fine going from Cripple Creek to Canon City. In our case, it hasn't rained in weeks, so the road was easily navigable. The caveat is don't try this in a 4x2 if there's been recent rain or snow. And, don't even think about doing this... More
