Description:

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to...

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art is temporarily closed to expand our universe! The museum’s new building, located at 12th Avenue and Bannock Street and expected to open in early 2018, will offer visitors an enhanced experience with approximately 65% more display space while staying true to the salon style and intimate atmosphere for which the Kirkland is known.

The museum’s three collections are:

• International Decorative Art—A celebrated collection including notable examples of every major design period from Arts & Crafts to Postmodern.

• Colorado & Regional Art—The largest repository of art showcasing the state and region’s talent, concentrating on the 1850s through the 1990s with about 7,000 works more than 700 artists.

• Vance Kirkland Retrospective—Kirkland (1904–1981) is generally considered Colorado’s most distinguished modern painter. About 550 paintings and about 600 drawings and prints are held in his estate collection.

Central to the move, Vance Kirkland’s art school & studio building (built 1910–1911 for Henry Read's Students' School of Art) was relocated to Bannock Street and oriented in the same direction. In a feat of engineering, the 1,384 square foot building was detached from the existing museum, moved eight blocks west and placed on the north side of the new museum on November 6, 2016.

Went to this museum during its final weeks at the Pearl St. location and it was awesome!! A great collection and it helped us get a real appreciation for Kirkland's style of work. Can't wait to see what the museum is going to be like at its new location.

Lots of art packed into his home, impossible to view everything on one visit. Will be relocating soon and we are looking forward to another visit at the new location which will lack the history of his home but promises better parking and viewing of the art work.

Vance Kirkland's studio & art school building (it was never his home) has been successfully moved to our new location! The three-room Arts & Crafts style building from 1911 was detached from the Kirkland Museum addition. We invite you to visit our website to see time lapse footage of this historic feat--rolling a complete building eleven blocks via eight sets... More

I visited on the next to last day in April before it closed and it was busy but I enjoyed it thoroughly. Most eclectic but interesting. I loved the artist's studio and seeing how he worked. When it moves to it's new location be sure to go!

We have been to Denver many times and had missed this gem until now. If you love art and design, you have to visit. It was a visual extravaganza, and not to be missed. So many beautiful things!

We recently visited the Kirkland. We did not know what to expect. We were not familiar with Kirkland's work. The museum is very nice. It has a terrific selection of Kirkland's work and other artists too. We did not expect to see such a great collection of art deco furniture and other objects. We thoroughly enjoyed the museum. By accident... More

A lot of mid century modern items. Makes you think how fast technology and what people like change. Very fascinating.

Denver Modernism is the theme. It includes artwork, glassware, ceramics, furniture and various items from about 1880 to 1980. A new location will be built so check the website because the museum will be closed during transition.
