In the mornign we rafted the river and in the evening we road E-bikes along the trail to see where we had been and get a better idea of how the city and the river relate. It was beautiful in both its natural beauty and the man-made parks and trail along the banks of the river. We even came across a few deer!

The tail through Durango along the Animas River is a must if you are in the area. Plenty of interesting historical markers along the way, and you can watch the rafters as they progress through town and the rapids south of town. We like to bike it so we can go the full length in 2-3 hours out and back.

We used this path several times during our one week stay. It parallels Main St & can be easily accessed from the downtown area. Much of the path has river views. The path also has oversized public art.
We were impressed with the areas cleanliness. We loved the artistic foot bridges that traverse the river.
A portion of this walk is by a Botanical Garden. Most of the plants were blooming. The flowers were gorgeous. Best of all, they were labeled so I could learn their names.

The trail pretty much follows the river north-south through Durango. Actually there are many access points, so find a city map and determine which sector you'd like to negotiate. If you're biking (and there are many bikers) it's easy to do the whole length. but walkers would probably want to be more selective. I used the GPS and it started me out on the east side near the hospital on Rivergate. I took the footbridge across and then turned north into the downtown area. If you're interested in playing in the water, that's possible too. There are many access points to rocky beach fronts and though, the August water seemed too low for boating, I did see several trying their hands at it by the deeper pools near the downtown.

some of the trail is perfect with excellent surface and views. but the neglected parts of the bike path are horrible. some of the cracks between the pavement have NEVER been filled. such a shame. the bike path crossing at the railroad crossing is terrible as well. i am sure the city will whine about not enough money. no need to replace the whole sections that are bad . . . just fill the cracks. and i am talking about a quality job of filling the cracks with grit and tar . . . not just a tar job. photos would have been a good idea but i did not think of it.

We walked along this paved trail twice during our visit. It is great for strollers and young children to watch the river. There are multiple picnic locations and broader park spots for children to play along the way. All visitors to Durango do a lot of walking and this is a good way to accommodate young children at the same time. It is a very popular trail and extends far north of Downtown. It is free - the hardest part is finding a parking spot.

A beautifully picturesque walking trail that follows the Animas River for a few miles. The path is paved and flat, which makes it very easy to travel upon. The path is fairly wide as well, which is helpful with so many people using it. We see multiple walkers, runners, and even bicyclists. As other reviewers pointed out, watch out for the bikers since they tend to appear suddenly and unexpectedly.
Despite the amount of foot (and bicycle) traffic, the walk is fairly peaceful and very scenic. A lot of nice views to experience as you hike along the trail.

Beautiful walking trail that follows the Animas River. Wide trail that has quite a bit of traffic. Walkers, runners, dogs, and bikes. WATCH for the bikers. They come flying around corners or from behind you so be aware. Multiple bridges you can cross and also tunnels that go under the road above.

Staying at the United RV park on the north side of town, we wanted to take our pooch on a short walk by the river. Just down the road a bit is the start of the Animas River Trail. A pretty trail and mostly paved, we wandered along the beautiful Animas river and enjoyed the morning coolness. Note: always be on the alert for bikers - they tend to approach from behind without notice or making a sound so you need to be on the lookout. We only went about 1-1/2 miles before turning back but it was a lovely walk.

We stopped at St. Lucia park in Durango before checking into our hotel. It's a beautiful park with lots of green space , children's playground, access to rafting and water play. What a great gem we discovered in this hiking/ biking trail that runs along the river. It's a well maintained paved path with access to downtown or anywhere else you'd like to go in the city. Lots of shade, and runs through several parks. We had our mountain bikes and I'm glad because of some uneven pavement. There's a small mountain bike track that runs off the path at St. Lucia park. Most of the path is level, with very few climbs. On our way back we stopped at the Animas River Brewery at the Doubletree Inn. It's right on the path and has bike racks. We had beer and hard cider, but there were also food offerings. A great reward for the ride!
