This river runs near/in Durango, but the best way to see it is by riding the Durango-Silverton train. It travels very close to th River for much of thr ride. The name Animas means spirit or soul which is very applicable! It is a beautiful River. In warmer months of summer, it can be rafted or tubed.

we first saw this river as we crossed the bridge into town and was impressed on how fast the water was running.......saw the river the entire trip up to Silverton on the train and it was running quite fast throughout the trip

Best way to view is the Durango-Silverton train. It travels very close to the river most of the ride. Fantastic views and photos. The name has a history. Look it up!

Our family has fished and rafted the Animas every time we come to Durango for the past 20 years! When the river is too low to raft, it is fun to tube.

Animas means spirit or soul, and the river certainly captured mine. With headwaters starting in the looming 14,000 foot peaks, it rushes down to irrigate feilds and provides fishing and rafting and scenic vistas for all to enjoy.

We enjoyed riding our mountain bikes on river paths and stopping at site to take a few photos too. Beautiful cool river and Trains are near for mountain trip into the past. Nice mountain downtown feeling with the river to cool off the city in heat of summer.

The lower Animas river is a wonderful way to see the Durango area. Depending on the water level the river can be a class I,II or III rapids, buts its mostly class I, with the higher classes frequent, but avoidable.

A Friday night kayak run from 32nd St. put-in to Home Depot. About an hour 1/2. Be prepared for some good rapids through the base of Smelter. Always check with the locals and be sure to wear safety gear. What a ride!!
