Animas means spirit or soul, and the river certainly captured mine. With headwaters starting in the looming 14,000 foot peaks, it rushes down to irrigate feilds and provides fishing and rafting and scenic vistas for all to enjoy.

The lower Animas river is a wonderful way to see the Durango area. Depending on the water level the river can be a class I,II or III rapids, buts its mostly class I, with the higher classes frequent, but avoidable.

A Friday night kayak run from 32nd St. put-in to Home Depot. About an hour 1/2. Be prepared for some good rapids through the base of Smelter. Always check with the locals and be sure to wear safety gear. What a ride!!

Enjoyed seeing most of this river on the Silverton train. Would love to kayak it one day instead of just rafting the lower section

We viewed the Animas River on the bus from Durango to Silverton and the train from Silverton to Durango. The views of the river were pleasant.

We had heard of the spill last year that sent 1 million gallons of wastewater contaminates from the Gold King Mine, north of Silverton into the Animas River and had seen pictures showing the river colored orange. Today, there doesn't seem to be any signed...More

While I do not know for sure if there are vacation homes available I highly suspect it. The area is filled with a great deal of natural beauty that certainly would attract folks to offer a vacation home paradise.

When the river is really running, there is one rapid that is a class IV - V. We have rafted with children as young as six and my parents who are in their 70s. Never any problem and we have always had a fantastic time!
