This beautiful scenic drive through Southern Colorado gave us an afternoon filled with fun. The wild horses were grazing near the road and we got great photos of them with their young foal. San Luis is the oldest town in Colorado and was an interesting drive thru. We continued south into New Mexico and enjoyed mountain scenery near Questa. At... More

Los Caminos Antiguos means ancient roads. It is in a beautiful area for Colorado. I always recommend scenic drives.

We had read a tripadvisor review indicating the presence of wild horses along this drive. An avid admirer of the wild mustangs, we went on the search. We counted three herds and were able to get great photos of one herd. The horses, with their unique markings, were delightful to watch. The herd included a number of darling foes. The... More

I spent three days traveling and photographing this area and route, all of it enjoyable and highly photogenic. A highlight was driving from Antonito to San Luis (both wonderful visits in their own rights) on Hwy 142 and, crossing unfenced public lands just west of the Rio Grande, spotting a herd of 15 wild horses. With a long lens and... More

Five years ago we retired & moved half-way across the country, & actually now live on Los Caminos Antiguos byway. This drive is very scenic & rich with history...14,000+ foot mountain peaks all around, Great Sand Dunes National Park (tallest sand dunes in North America), Fort Garland Museum (1 of Kit Carson's outposts), & lots of Native American & Hispanic... Off the beaten, tourist trap path, and on historic old west trails and towns that represent the regions colorful Spanish, Anglo, and Native American past; all for the price of a few gallons of gas. Don't forget your camera!
