This is a lovely and rather moderate hike, so it is good for getting acclimatized if you are not used to elevation. Great view. You can access the pass from the Georgetown side, and indeed can drive a sturdy vehicle up there. But THAT's no fun. Instead go over to the Keystone side, and access the pass from Horseshoe Basin. No motorized vehicles allowed on this side, so hike your way up and feel morally superior to those who drove up LOLOL.
Round trip hike about 5 1/4 miles, elevation gain just under 2200 feet. You might see moose by the trailhead.

Been up there a number of times. One way up is in s dry, or wet, creek bed. Bumpy and rocky and at the right time of the year the wild flowers are terrific. Don't go in the old mines but it's interesting to see them and contemplate the hard work it took to get there and work them'I am told, this was once a pss over the mountain to the west. No longer, it's now up and back.

Accessed off Guanella Pass, above Georgetown, Colorado, this 4 wheel drive trail has beautiful views, both in the trees and above tree line. Best done with a rugged, high clearance 4wd vehicle with good tires, and an experienced driver, some spots are rocky, steep and narrow, and need to be navigated with care. Check with the local Forest Service Office about conditions. Travel with another vehicle, if possible. The road crosses a lovely creek several times as it crashes down the mountainside. There are some great picnic spots.
Be advised that it goes up to over 13,000 feet in elevation. There are several old mines and the ghost town of Waldorf, where not much is left. The trail continues up to McClellan Mountain and the old mine and ghost town of Santiago,

We have been up here quite a few times, but this time, we took the low road that passes through the water. Not as many scenic vistas, but very pretty. Not difficult at all with a higher clearance vehicle. It was still too early to make it all the way up, becase of the snow. We enjoyed the old buildings, and one member of our group knew a lot bout the history of the area. If you go, take at least two vehicles, lunch and plenty of water.

You can't beat this high alpine hike, especially if you start at the old Waldorf Mine site. It is a lot of up but its on an old road so it is not that bad. The views from the pass are spectacular with views of 2 14'teeners, Grays and Torrey's. Mountain goats greet you at the top.

Must see! The scenic drives from Georgetown are amazing! We wished we had planned more time to stay. We drove 1.5hrs just to ride the train and tour the mine, but there is so much more to do in Georgetown, we needed more than a full day!
