Our July visit was rewarded with beautiful wildflowers. Our Subaru Forester made it a good portion up the road, we hiked the last 2 miles. We went early because BOY does it get crowded. There are dozens of AWD and FWD vehicles by the time...More

The views were amazing and the drive wasn't too crazy. We took tons of photos and stopped along the way. It was a really good area to pack lunch and enjoy the scenery. I particularly liked seeing all the old mines and waterfalls.

Get of the main highways and do a little gravel road exploring. It's well worth your time, the views are outstanding.

This is doable with a stock 4x4 and well worth the time and effort. Take a good camera and some snack foods.

On July 2 there were fifty vehicles stuck in traffic. The ATV's have the road all chewed up. The All wheel drive cars that usually can go up there could not proceed. Jeeps we're getting stuck. The cars that usually go up were parking on...More

We dispersed camped up near the Mount Sneffels lower trailhead prior to our early morning summit. The road is good for any vehicle until you get to the turn to head up to the Mount Sneffels trailhead. From there high clearance 4wd is required as...More

We started up and it was okay at first. But the trail got rougher and scary near the top. You need to take a four wheel drive vechicle. There's beautiful streams, lots of mountain views, and narrow roadways. The drop offs of these road ways...More

Took a morning drive to Yankee Boy Basin while visiting Ouray. It was incredibly beautiful but not for the faint of heart. The road is easy early on but the last piece requires 4 wheel drive, at least when we did it in early June....More

We didn't have many 4 wheet drive trails to choose from, but it didn't matter one bit. I can't imagine a more scenic one than Yankee Boy. We couldn't go the entire way due to snow, but we made it up to the restrooms about...More

It's a wonderful experience without having to leave a vehicle with clean windows. The main road is mostly narrow, unpaved, with only occasional space to pull off.

The claims were located in 1875 by Michael Dermody and R. B. Town of Ouray, and later on were taken over by the Yankee Boy Mining Company of Boston, Mass. This company developed the group to a considerable extent. The Yankee... More
