It was a tough 3+ hour hike from the car park to the top to see the lake. I didn't even have time to cross over and see Island Lake, will leave it for the next visit. Walked into wrong paths a couple of times - always remember to stick to the main path and ignore the distractions like little... More

One of the best backpacking places in Colorado, best time to visit is late July to early August if you love wild flowers. Hike and camp at the higher lake if you want some solitude, most day hikers only go to the lower lake. If you are a peak bagger, there are many choices nearby, Golden Horn, Vermilion, and Fuller... My husband and I did this hike in July 2016. This was our first legitimate mountain hike, and I have to say that I cannot imagine a better hike! It was challenging for us as we don't normally do this rigorous of hiking and we are flatlanders, but with lots of breaks, we made it to the top...and then on... More

Unbelievable. Hike is hard but not challenging. If you are new to hiking in Colorado you may try something different but you don't have to be an expert. Just pace yourself.

In an area packed with amazing Alpine terrain, why does everyone go to the lake? The San Juans have hundreds of miles of marvelous trails, wildflowers galore and plenty of delightful creeks. Yet everyone and their dog wants to hang out at the lakes. If you go, be prepared to visit a "sacrifice zone". It's lovely, but venture further afield... More

We were told the view is spectacular, it is true. We were not disappointed. The hike is not easy, but worth it when you come to this pristine blue lake. It is a must see if you are in Silverton.

Keep in mind a few things: 1) It is very strenuous. The way up passes by some steep edges, you have to cross a few shallow but fast-moving streams, and it is uphill all the way there. 2) The bugs can be horrible. We went in late July, and if we stopped for more than a few seconds, dozens of... More

I was there on a drizzly cold rainy day and it was still a beautiful sight to see. There were people camping nearby and it is not a strenuous hike to get there.

We camped at South Mineral Campground to do this hike and loved every second of the uphill climb. You can't find a better bang for your buck than this hike. Every view at every switchback is so worth it. The lower basin was spectacular covered in wildflowers and the actual lake is amazing. While there, we hiked up above the... More
