Finding the trailhead for the Trail is somewhat difficult. At the time my wife and I attempted to cross country ski Government Trail, the skills required were beyond our somewhat novice abilities. The trail initially is somewhat narrow and winding. A moderate level of cross country skiing ability is necessary - particularly the ability to check, turn, and stop well.... More

Government trail runs between Aspen and Snowmass Village. It's a fairly easy 9 mile walk compared to the hikes in town. It's a little of everything from heavily wooded to big views. A great way to spend a few hours.

great trail for all ages and abilities. Winds through the mountain and through wild flowers and aspen groves. I would consider it an easy downhill option

Beautiful trail, but mountain bikers race past at dangerous speeds and scream nasty things at hikers.

An outstanding mountain bike trail. I rode it as part of a ride starting out from the Westin Snowmass working my way to Aspen. If you are an avid mountain biker, do not miss this amazing trail. Here is my recommended route: http://www.mtbproject.com/trail/2843393 Remember, it's the Government trail so it OWNS!

I live in Snowmass part time and have hiked this trail many times. It's a beautiful hike in the warm weather months and perfect for Snowshoeing as well. I usually access it by Tom Blake Trail or you can pick it up at the top of Faraway Road.

The East and West parts of this trail are very different, but both are great hikes, depending on what you feel like doing. I really like the part that goes from Aspen Rec Center to the top of Wood Road on Snowmass. It is uphill, but not steep and very pretty.

Ran this trail in the Golden Leaf half Marathon. Great trail, very scenic, but also very challenging especially when you are running it!

Decided to skip the Maroon Bells and crossed the street to get on a local Aspen Trail. It was much more interesting than expected and quite secluded. There is a huge canyon directly across from the Maroon Bells parking lot. You can't see it from the road. We were very happy to have happened upon this trail.

The Government trail is a favorite of mine. It crosses from Snowmass village to Aspen through Aspen forest, brooding deep stands of spruce, across streams and meadows. Along the way you'll likely encounter elk and other wildlife. Unfortunately you'll probably run into mountain bikers, often going too fast. It's a five star hiking trail except for the bikers and the... More
