We started this hike on a Saturday morning before 9 am so it was not busy. By the time we got back 2 1/2 hours later the parking lot was full and we saw a lot of people starting. up the trail. The scenery is beautiful and you are way above the creek until after you go by the barn... More

A great area for overnight camping; both campground or disperse. Great fishing along the Elk River; requires patience. Lots of hikes; Gold Creek, Zirkel Circle, Gilpen and Mica lakes. I wouldn't recommend any of the hikes for small children or out of shape adults. While the hikes are not easy ones, you will be rewarded with spectacular views. If you... More

Drive to it then hike around it. The fall is my favorite with the Aspens turning. The air is fresh and clean. Breath taking vistas.

This one day hike leaves from a super busy trailhead with limited parking so get there early. You will see lots of people within a mile or two of the trailhead but otherwise there will be the perfect amount hikers for a solo hiker like me who like a little safety in seeing someone every 30 minutes or so. I... More

Stunning. Beautiful. There is no reason not to go here. Although a 4x4 would be helpful if you do as the roads are pretty rough.

The MZW is truly a local gem. Three idyllic alpine lakes can be reached from the Slavonia trailhead. It is only 30 miles from downtown Steamboat Springs and getting to the trailhead involves a beautiful drive up the Elk River Valley and perhaps a stop at the Clark Store for coffee and a fresh muffin on the way or some... The Gilpin Loop trail is well maintained and a wonderful, though long hike. The online information states its a 9 miles hike, but our GPS told us we hiked 12 miles and locals confirmed this length. It is worth every step and if you hike the loop anti-clockwise you hit the highest point of the hike and get the view... More

We spend four days in Zirkel on a backpacking loop. In and out of the Lake Katherine Trailhead on the East side of the Wilderness Area. Stops included: Bear Lake, Summit of Mt. Zirkel, Big Horn Lake. Very high elevation -- most of the trip between 9,000 - 12,000 feet along the continental divide. Not many people. The pine beetle... More

We did the hike to the Mad Barn and back (4 miles). All of the elevation gain happens at the beginning, but don't lose heart. The barn is amazing as are the views throighout
