The back country is great place for hiking and horse back riding. But the beetle blight has destroyed much of the beauty of the area.

The Zirkel Circle is one of the most beautiful hikes in Steamboat, with the trail being about 11 miles and taking 5-7 hours. There is evidence of beetle kill everywhere, though, even though this is one of most pristine areas in all of Colorado. You...More

Beautiful and definitely needs to be on your "to do" list. For ease, go left at the first intersection. For the best view . . . go right (harder).

We have done a half dozen or more hikes in the Zirkels. The "Zirkel Circle" to Gilpen lake being one of the best. Buy "Hiking The Boat" for directions and options.

You can camp where you like. Just be sure to know the rules of a wilderness area, such as making camp off the trail and at least 100 ft from water sources. It's beautiful there! Have fun!
