Glorious theatrical experience
Jan. 2021
This theatre/opera house is a delight for the senses. They show a variety of world-class shows, such as Billy Elliott, South Pacific, and Camelot, in a truly gorgeous building that really adds to the overall experience. The building has existed since the mid-19th century, and you can feel the history of some of the shows that originated here, like Man of La Mancha. The acting/singing and the orchestra are consistently superb, which is really a testament to the theatre that it can attract such high-quality talent. It's set right in the heart of East Haddam, next to the Gelston House restaurant (great for a pre-show meal) and right on the scenic Connecticut River. Devils' Hopyard State Park and Gillette Castle State Park are both nearby.

Opera House
Jul. 2020
We took a scenic ride up the river for dinner at a restaurant near the Opera House. It’s a beautiful historic building. Sadly, during the 2020 season it’s closed due to the Covid scare. We are looking forward to better days ahead when we will be able to enjoy live performances.

Wonderful show of a Broadway production.
Nov. 2019
Billy Elliot was an exciting and wonderful show done within the confines of a local showhouse. Amazing how the scenery and staging worked like Broadway but within the small space the had to work with. Many times we were all amazed that the cast was able to have so many people on stage, move and dance and sing to our total enjoyment. Worth every minute and every penny we spent to be entertained that well.

Terrific show, but...
Nov. 2019
Came to see a performance of Billy Elliot at the Goodspeed Opera House, an imposing, beautiful theater in East Haddam, CT. The show was unbelievable. Terrific acting, orchestra, scenery. The downside? We were seated in Row L and had a lot of difficulty seeing the stage easily since the rows are not really pitched much if at all. I had a very large man sitting in front of me and spent the performance bobbing side to side to try to see what was going on. My suggestion? Try to select seats as close to the stage as possible, or sit in the upper wings where the seats ARE tiered

Fantastic experience!!! Every seat in the opera house has a good view. We had balcony seats directly over the stage and orchestra pit. The actors and actresses were great. The setting is quite intimate and cozy. It is family friendly and inexpensive enough to go several times a season, if you live nearby. We were up from Florida sight seeing in the area and found a real hidden gem and fell in love with place!

Quaint intimacy packed with history

I have passed this beautiful Riverside establishment a 100 times or more in my life but finally got inside the doors for a show recently.
I was surprised by how small it is on the inside compared to the perception from the exterior. You enter through the beautiful Victorian doorways, encountering a large staircase in front of you – – the playhouse is actually on the third floor so conquering several staircases is required to get to the main theater.
To state that there are no bad seats in the house would be a severe understatement – – you feel like you’re in someone’s living room, Elbow to elbow with friends and family. The only unfortunate aspect to this arrangement is that there is no gradation to the floor so each row is at the same level with the exception of the balconies and the very very back of the main orchestra. If you have a tall gentleman seated in front of you, as I did, there’s not really a great way to get around a visual blockage other than to constantly crane your neck and shift your position. This did not dampen my enjoyment of the whole experience as I am fascinated by old buildings and historical perspective— both of which this beautiful structure delivers in spades
Parking is scattered about the place, and if you’re interested in a whole evening experience, the beautiful Gelston House, equally as old as the opera house, is adjacent to satisfy your culinary needs. There is a small gift shop/snack station on the first floor for intermission and of course a bar behind with special member rooms for congregation between acts.
The staff was exceptional, the whole experience magical. Can’t wait to go back

Nice theater, but strangely angled floor in orchestra
Oct. 2019
We were fortunate to see "Billy Elliot" during our recent visit. While I really enjoyed the show, we sat near the back in the orchestra. Most theaters raise the back seats a bit to make it easier to see. For some reason that escapes me, the Goodspeed had the front seats set higher so I couldn't see as well as I would have liked. I heard all of the songs though. I would recommend this show.

Great performance in a historic setting
Oct. 2019
Went to See Billy Elliot. Show was excellent. Building is historic completed in 1876. Sat in Balcony and if you are short, the railing can get in the way. Be warned, there are crossbar supports going from the outside wall to the ceiling assuming for lighting support, but you need to be carefull as painted to blend with the decor and I almost walked into it, my friend whacked her head on it. Other levels don't have this issue. Theater is very small with an intimite atmosphere. Parking is down the hill, but there is a walkway down to it, very well lighted.
