Description:

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America....

Yale University Art Gallery is the oldest college art museum in America. The Gallery’s encyclopedic holdings of 200,000 objects range from ancient times to the present day and represent civilizations from around the globe. FREE and open to the public. On December 12, 2012, the Yale University Art Gallery celebrated the grand opening of the renovated and expanded museum. The expanded Gallery transforms the visitor experience of both the museum and its esteemed collections. The project united the 1953 modernist structure designed by Louis Kahn, the 1928 Old Yale Art Gallery, and the 1866 Street Hall into one continuous structure while maintaining the distinctive architectural identity of each.

Reserve a few hours to visit the Art Gallery. It´s not often that a free art gallery allows you to be so close to a Monet, Picasso or Van Gogh painting. It´s worth checking visitor hours previously.

A really high quality permanent collection and some amazing temporary exhibits. And it is free! We happened upon the exhibit of nazca clothing and fabrics that are 1,000 to over 2,000 years old or more! The colors and designs are incredible. One of the most fascinating exhibits have ever seen. Would be great to learn how on earth these fabrics... More

This gem of a museum is a must. There is something for everyone, from coins, statues and paintings to African exhibits. The rooms have not been crowded when we've visited, on weekends, and you have time to admire the art, take your time to view, often with no one nearby. The guards are very nice, and helpful. There is enough... More

No trip to New Haven would be complete without visiting the Art Gallery. I never tire of the impressive permanent collection. The curator is to be commended for the acquisitions But the art is not limited, of course, just to the Museum. The Divinty School had an inspired show representing an artist connected with the university of Charleston. Kirsten Moran.... More

The fantastic Yale Art Gallery is composed of two connected buildings a late 19th century building and the earlier of the two art galleries Louis Kahn designed at Yale. Because the buildings can be on different levels, make sure you see both. In particular, the spectacular American paintings and decorative arts collection is in the older building and easily missed.... More

Reminds me of MOMA and the Met, a little smaller scale. A little smaller scale. The pieces are A+, superb, the best of anything. Brace yourself to see the best Van Gogh ever, and right next to it, a Van Gogh in pointillism?? Modern art collection on the 3rd floor is simply great, fantastic Miro, Keinholz, Rosenquist, Rothko. Move through... More

Incredible building, old-fashioned and stylish. I was very pleased to find Monet, Gougin and VanGog's pieses of art. As well on the first floor there are Ethruscian and Ninevian masterpieces - as an echo fromthe lost worlds.. I didn't have time to visit 3-rd and 4-th floor for contrmporary and modern art, but the collection is very fancy, locals say... More

To be able to enjoy these works of art for free was amazing. So much to see. Worth visiting. They say it's only 10% of Yale has. You will be shocked.

The exhibits and atmosphere were top notch. We ran to the corner and found ourselves in a European style nave full of statuary and mosaic fragments reminiscent of the Louvre. The Goya prints were also extraordinary.
