Trails Galore

Enjoy all the different trails that branch off on either side of the bridge. It is a nice feeling to be at the altitudes for great views. The parking lot needs smoothing over, but the park is free. And it is accessible from town.

Beautiful views
Jul. 2020 • Friends
Park is free. Short walk to large iron bridge. after crossing the bridge bare right to top of trail to see the view of the lake. The trail to the top is uphill all the way, Rocky, not difficult but you could get winded if not used to walking. Once at the top are large boulders to the outlook. Makes for amazing views and pictures! We didn’t hike elsewhere. Take water for sure!

Nice views

Old iron bridge at the entrance that you cross to get into the park. Short walk to a legendary vista over the Housatonic River and Lake Lllinonah. Trails pass by historical home foundations and chimneys and remnants of industrial works. Across the street from the main park is actually my favorite place. There is a little spur of the Housatonic River that goes by the train tracks and the location is very peaceful

Great views of Lake Lillinona
Mar. 2020
My family and I had a hike here on 3/18. We hiked only on the east side of the lake where the hill overs the best view. I recommend getting to the cliff overlooking the lake and walking all the way to the summit. There are interesting ruins on the hill and we saw an immature bald eagle circling at the top of the hill.

A Few Tips About Lovers Leap State Park
Sep. 2019
This Connecticut park was dedicated in 2007, but the area comprised the Pootatuck Indians for hundreds of years along Housatonic River. Parking and visiting this splendid park are “FREE.”

There are a number of interesting displays telling about the history of the area. Not far from where you park the car, is a bright red 1895 Berlin Iron Bridge that was recently refurbished. This bridge is indeed rather photogenic.

A trail will take you up 1200 feet up to a rock that looks like it would be a “lovers leap.” There are a number of ruins from the Bridgeport Wood Finishing Company factory. Over fifty of the acres was an estate owned by Catherine Judson Hurd.

Legend and folklore state that a chief’s daughter fell in love with a white man. Circumstances would have it that both would die going over the falls nearby. The real tragedy is what happened to all the Indians in the area. New Milford was settled as early as 1707.

Perfect Place to Spend a Beautiful Day
Oct. 2019
What a perfect place to spend time in nature. The path to the Lover's Leap lookout is slightly steep, but nothing too challenging. I've just had a hip replacement and was able to do it with no problems. The trails are quite wide in parts and well kept, so you won't be tripping over roots or rocks. You can choose to spend a little time or a lot, depending on your goals. The bonus, though, it's a quick hike to the lookout, which is a must for anyone visiting this park. The view of the river below is unbeatably breath-taking. Beware if you're wearing open-toed sandals, though, there were a lot of shards of glass (broken bits of bottles) lying around near the lookout.
The historical signs on the way in are worth looking at to really get a grasp on the history of the area, and to learn more about the romantic (and sad) legend of "Lovers Leap."

As has been mentioned, this lil park is a great way to spend an hour or two. Being a photographer, I took the opp to catch a few snaps along the trail . Easy walk up to the overlook, even for an old fella like myself!

This flea market is very big considering it’s in a local town. It has a little of everything from new to old with vendor trucks with food for breakfast, lunch & ice cream. Go early to find the best & get some good deals.
