Great for hikes.

Great hikes and the views are wonderful. Many of the trails are sand so be ready. Lots of wildlife if you keep a sharp eye out.

Many walking paths let you get to different areas of the reserve. Watch out for alligators and snakes by staying on the paths and making noise. The birds are varied and beautiful.

A beautiful hiking trail winds its way through wooded land and I saw fossilized bird tracks in the shallow water by the dock -- the place wasn't crowded at all when we went and I got a prize-winning photo of a guy throwing his fishing net!

This is what Florida should be, natural and filled with birds, wildlife and flowers. If you are in this area, don't miss a visit to the national wildlife refuges. We paddles out to Atsena Otie Key and also paddled around the various inlets on cedar key. Yes, there wee bugs biting out on the island but that's a chance you... More

If you love the REAL Florida I grew up with, you must visit this refuge. March and April are the BEST! Try early AM to really hear the birds singing and active. Later in the days ANS during the summer bring your bug repellent! But the refuge trails are always in excellent condition. THANKS to Mr. Andrea and his staff... More

A lovely island with a short walk to a cemetery/memorial, land on the north side and follow the boardwalk. We were viciously assaulted by mosquitoes which kind of destroyed the tranquility..... The beach is beautiful and it is a very short kayak paddle from the town beach.

My daughter and I rented kayaks and paddled out to the island. We hiked the trail back to the cemetery, very interesting.

This chain of small islands off Cedar Key are a paddler’s paradise. From several launch sites on Cedar Key, you can paddle out to historic Atsena Otie Key (once a major population center; now abandoned) or other keys. These islands played small but interesting roles in the Seminole Wars and Civil War, and have been battered by hurricanes. I decided... More
