You can camp wherever you wishes in amazing landscapes. Or stay at the Bait Bimah place where you will find guides for hikings and canyoing. Beautiful wadi and not too difficult walks with young children if you start by the end of the little snake canyon (in the opposite way of the great little snake canyon canyoing pathway). You can walk there, cross the wadi, swim in natural swimming pools and practice very easy canyoing with youbg children (2 and a half and 5 years old). First thing first: you will need to a good 4x4... This track is brutal while offering amazing scenic views. Great way to go from Mascat to Al Hamra (and The View hotel).

As frequently mentioned, you do need a 4WD but the majority of the drive, bar one or two steep sections, is not that difficult. The views, however, are stunning and worth every stop, photo and opportunity to take in the western Hajjar mountains. We set off from Al Hamra, passed Hatt (did not go into snake gorge as not enough time) to the pretty village of Bald Sayt. Passing Al Zammah, we turned off the Wadi Bani Awf in the direction of Wadi As Sahtan, passing through the honey (expensive but delicious) producing village of Al Jufar where we saw the traditional hives and were invited in for tea by a local family. Joining the main section of road below Ayn Umq and from there it's about an hour to Ar Rustaq. If you get the chance to do part or all of this route, pack a picnic and do not hesitate.…

You can drive the Wadi Bani Awf route in about two hours. However, make it a full day. There are great places to stop and walk - to simply admire the view, or explore a Wadi. Snake Canyon and Little Snake Canyon make excellent hikes of up to 3 hours each. take swimmers and shoes you don't mind getting wet. Take a 4WD, and understand low ratio gearing...! some very steep sections! One of our favourite places in Oman…
