Fort Zach has a place in history but the adjacent beach is the hidden gem. Don't forget water shoes as the rocky coral lines the first few feet of water. Water is gorgeous, cafe was quaint and affordable, and umbrella/chair rental staff friendly and accommodating. Best value in Key West.

The beach is gorgeous. Swimming, snorkeling.... all of it was great. They have shaded areas as well. Will be back.

This is pretty much the only beach area in Key West. Rather, it's the largest. It's a state park, so you have to pay a couple dollars to enter, but that keeps the riff-raff out and the beaches cleaner. There are a lot of picnic tables, and a concession stand you can get snacks and drinks at, and rent beach... More

That's what the locals call it. Self-guided tour. Admission $2.50. Cool historic site spanning wars through Cuban Missile Crisis, where it was a radar installation. 15-minute walk from main road could be challenging on a sunny hot day. Spend about a half-hour there.

Don't get me wrong, great history, but if you are not a history buff or in the military, you may not get your kick outta of this place. The beach is ok.

My family of four took a seaplane charter through key west seaplane charters, and spent the afternoon exploring the fort and snorkeling. There was a lot of fascinating history and the snorkeling was amazing.

I asked our B&B staff what beach would have water that was deep enough to swim in and had chairs and umbrellas to rent. They suggested the beach at the state park- it had a rocky beach so definitely bring water shoes if you go- other than that it was perfect. Water was wonderful, they set the umbrella and chairs... Best beach on the island, hands down! Grab some bikes and enjoy the amazing view! Worth the ride out there.
