Arrived at 7:30am to a nearly empty parking lot so had our pick of a tree-shaded spot. Husband found mangrove cuckoo; blackpole, palm, prairie, and yellow-rumped warblers; gray, western and eastern kingbirds; mourning and ground dove; bobolink; frigate birds; osprey; brown pelicans. I joined the Ranger-lead tour of the Fort. Lots of swimmers and picnickers. Pretty day.

We were married at Fort Zach five years ago and hired a photographer for our return visit on our anniversary. The park is beautiful and provides amazing views at sunset. Nice place to watch the cruise ships and sail boats pass by. A definite must while in Key West.

Really enjoyed my visit here today. The beach, like many island beaches, is rocky and coral covered, but this beach has some nice natural sandy areas. I saw some beautiful fish while snorkeling around the rocks. Bring your own snorkeling gear and save yourself some money. There is a little cafe on premises that most seemed to enjoy. It was... This was a great stop on our family trip to Key West. Small charge to enter - a beach (which is rare on Key West. Changing rooms and clean toilets. Plus eating under umbrellas.. Check out their website for details. Improvements appear to be under way outside the gate.

Great view of the water from the top of the fort. Also the nicest beach on Key West in my opinion. Worth a visit.

Key West is not great for beaches but this one is probably the best, you do have to pay to access and it is quite walk/taxi journey from most accommodation but probably worth it.The cafe and restrooms are good, sunbeds and umbrella are available.

Stayed at Smathers Beach....but went here for the day. Opted to walk in...not knowing how far back it goes. Probably best to just drive back. You can tour the fort and read about that he history which is interesting. The beach is pretty big.... you can rent chairs and umbrellas but the beach and surf is very rocky...so swim shoes... More

Guided tours by park rangers are daily at 11am. Our tour with ranger Andrew Grim was one of the most interesting I've ever been on. Seriously, this guy is awesome (and I've been on tours in Prague, Berlin, Venice etc). Don't miss this if you have any interest in history!

The fort was a great piece of history. We didn't take a guided tour, but there were plenty of placards to read with the history of the fort. Great view of the water from the top of the wall. The fort alone was worth the small entry fee. One surprising thing was that the only trash cans were right next... More

We went to this State park after 5pm to see the Sunset from a less congested / crazy locale (versus Mallory Square). The Fort was closed, but we observed the outside. The Beach area has plenty of White Sand and they have even added 3 large piles of rocks just offshore to create habitat for fish, thus making it an... More
