The home of Capt. John H. Geiger, harbor pilot and master wrecker, was built between 1846 and 1849. Slated for destruction in 1958, it was saved by the Mitchell Wolfson Family Foundation, a nonprofit educational institution. This large scale restoration was the first of its kind in Key West, thus sparking the restoration movement in Key West.Antique enthusiasts will appreciate the unique quality of the furnishings displayed in the Audubon House Museum. All furnishings reflect the elegance and comfortable living enjoyed for a wealthy family in Key West during the mid-1800’s. 31 of the original hand colored Antique engravings of the 22 birds J.J. Audubon painted in the Florida Keys during his 6 week visit in 1832 can be seen throughout the House. In addition to informative reading panels, an introduction to the property and its history will be given by your guide, and then you will roam the house and gardens at your leisure. Varieties of orchids and bromeliads emerge from the foliage and trees to surprise you with their vibrant blooms. Native plants and exotics provide an environment that is reminiscent of old Key West. Trees and plants are labeled with their common names, Latin names, and country of origin. This is the finest tropical garden in the Florida Keys. You may even catch a glimpse of some of our local birds! The garden tour also includes a self-guided visit to the Cook House. Houses of the period in the Florida Keys did not have inside kitchens as they were sources of heat and of course, fire hazards. A visit to the Audubon Gallery of Fine Arts will take you through the wonderful world of original Audubon Antique hand painted lithographs. The original Antique prints of some of J.J. Audubon’s contemporaries are also available for sale. The Museum Shop offers a wide selection of unique one-of-a-kind gifts, home décor, Antiques and educational materials. Our lush tropical gardens can be the site of your event:, whether you are planning a wedding or a corporate event. Let us make your event happen.

Don't miss this great gem. You don't need to be a bird lover to appreciate the work of James Audubon. It was semi guided, with most of the tour being self guided, which was great. We could move at our own pace. Educational and enjoyable 2 hours of our day!

The boy and I were snorkling and my wife was wandering Key West for 3 hours while we were gone. She happened past here and decided to go in and see. She was so happy that she did it. If you are birders you of course know all about Audubon. She isn't one, but she does enjoy art and birds... More

Garden was very nice, House was well restored captains home. Audubon collection of prints was the draw. The fellow that gave us the introduction was quite uninformed about the birds in the prints and there current decline. Instead of simply saying he did not know he made a insulting remark. Should be renamed to respect the captain that lived in... More

Thank you for taking the time to review the house and grounds. We have six different guides who work in the museum and all have their particular "niche", whether it is architecture, antiques, Key West history, Audubon's actual work or gardens. Since we are not run by the Audubon Society, it can be confusing for our birders who come in... More

The house is a lovely historic home with beautiful, but not original, furnishings. The collection of Audubon illustrations is beautiful. There does not seem to be any firm connection to Audubon himself, other than using a branch from a tree in the yard for a perch for a bird. Gardens are small.

We appreciate you taking the time to leave your thoughts and comments on the property. We are glad that you enjoyed the Audubon work displayed throughout the house and yes, the connection is via the White Crowned Pigeon image, with the birds perched on the branches of the Geiger Tree (named after the Captain who owned the house.) Thank you... More

The history of the house and restoration was very interesting - don't miss the outdoor kitchen. We would have enjoyed the gardens more but for all of the activity due to setting up for a wedding later in the day.

Thank you for taking the time to review the house and grounds. We are glad you enjoyed the property (and the cook house!) and are sorry that your visit in the gardens was marred by the wedding set up. Please come and see us again and give us another try! More

We love Audubon's work and the museum has many of his works. The house goes back to the mid-1850's. Beautifully preserved, but connection to Audubon is tangential.

Thank for you taking the time to leave your comments and review of the property. And yes, while the connection to Audubon is more the property than the house, it's a lovely way to commemorate his visit and display his work. We are happy that you enjoyed your visit and hope to see you again. More

This a a restored house of the Geiger family and the restoration is very well done. The house has a very nice collection of John James Audubon prints. Audubon pained 22 birds native to Key West. The gift shop has nice items, even though a bit pricey.

Need a break from Duval street? Here is a quiet historical site that has beautiful gardens with many local trees for shade. The house tour will provide you a picture of late 1800's life on KW island. Great gift shop!

The tour gives you a visual history lesson on what brought all the nice wooden homes to the island. They also have a collection of Audubon's work (hence the name of the business), a sweet shady porch with rockers....it's a quiet oasis near the Front Street retail.

The connection to Audubon is a huge stretch. He stayed on the land maybe...but never in the house. The gardens are not that great. The key West garden club garden tour is better and it is free.

Thank you for taking the time to leave your comments. We do value all opinions and are sorry that you didn't have time to research the property before your visit to see that Audubon did not live here, but that the connection is to him and a piece of his art and a part of our garden. That being said,... More
