I wasn't sure what to expect, but this was a very nice museum displaying wonderful artwork and some great history lessons. The Old Man and the Sea was wonderfully illustrated and told as you walk up the flights of stairs. So if you want to read and view all of it, expect to spend at least half your visit on... More

The Custom House was a very interesting place. I especially love that they had the Old Man and the Sea illustrates up the three story stair case

I was amazed at the amount of history portrayed within this museum. Plan on at least one hour, but two would be better if you want to read all the signs. I am not a history buff, but I thoroughly enjoyed this museum.

I love the Mario Sanchez collection! The Hemingway sketches, the train history and there is always a new fun local exhibit. All the Johnson sculptures are great!

The display of Guy Harvey's illustrations for Hemingway's The Old Man & The Sea is definitely worth the trip! Tennessee Williams' paintings are interesting, and the museum has a fine collection of Mario Sanchez's works. Historically, there is a lot about Flagler's railroad & the sinking of the USS Maine. It was a nice air conditioned afternoon visit.

This restored 19th Century Custom House has an interesting history of its own, but for my money,, there's one reason to visit: the staircase is lined with pen-and-ink drawings of scenes from Hemingway's The Old Man and the Sea, drawn by marine artist Guy Harvey, best known for his sailfish on the backs of T-shirts. These are well worth seeing.... More

It was a treat visiting the Key West Art & Historical Society at the Custom House. We received a reduced admission due to a reciprocal membership with our home Hussein. On the first level is extensive information about the history of the Custom House. As I started up the stairway to the second level, I read on small cards "The old... More

Great City and Hemingway history. Mario Sanchez, a Cuban wood carver and incredible story teller is also featured. We can't visit Key West without visiting this incredible institution. Almost forgot to Mention the Johnson sculptures. Grateful for the generosity of many people and organizations which make this all possible!

Before entering the front doors I knew zero about the origins and fascinating history of Key West. Its past includes pirates, sunken ships and treasure, a cigar industry that was relocated to here from Cuba, and, of course, the US government getting in on the taxes. Hemingway's original army uniform, and more!

Yesterday I came here for the second time in a month. If you really want to learn about Key West history in its fullest this is the place to start. Really read everything. The downstairs has changing exhibits but upstairs will educate you on the cigar industry, u.s.s. Maine sinking, Flagler railroad, and Hemingway/prohibition. Plus the Mario Sanchez art works... More
