This is a restored encampment for people who worked on the Overseas Railroad. Henry Flagler spearheaded the extension of the Florida East Coast Railway to get people from the mainland to Key West. As you drive through the keys, you can still see the remnants of the structures. Pigeon Key offers some great exhibits of the life and culture of... More

If you want to know about the history of the railroad, this is where to learn about it! The boat ride to the island is an added enjoyment and Pigeon Key is a great place to get some memorable pictures.

My husband wanted to go on this, and I wasn't enthused, but it was really worthwhile! The boat crew that takes you out points out wildlife on the way. Our tour guide on the key, Reita, was wonderful. Such fascinating stories. I learned a lot of history. The waters around this small key are very pretty, also.

Because the old 7-Mile Bridge is closed for renovation for an expected 3-4 years, the only way to visit Pigeon Key is by taking the tour and accessing the Island by boat (a 15 minute boat ride). The tour lasts for approximately 2 hours (as of 2/2017 @ 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm) and is very informative. One will... More

We visited the pigeon key visitors center in an old railcar. Came to realize we could take a tour of Pigeon Key and learn more about the Flagler rail system. Our guide was Eric who is extremely knowledgeable. It was a quick but pleasant boat ride to the key and back. Highly recommend. Price was right too at $12 per... More

The boat ride over and back is a fun ride, and Pigeon Island itself is a lost piece of the Keys. Our docent was very informative and we had plenty of time to wander on our own. The railroad and highway building history of the keys, and of the Labor Day Hurricane, is quite interesting. Also, the trees and plants... More

We took the ferry over to the island and had a great afternoon. It's interesting to learn how the original bridge was constructed for the railway system and the converted into the highway that was used until the early 1980's.
