A large zoo with a refreshingly logical layout
An expansive, beautiful property with a comprehensive collection of animals and exhibits, I was pleased to find the layout straightforward and logical, comprised of two large loops meeting in the middle without meandering paths and confusing dead-ends. I was able to walk the entirety of the grounds in about two hours and spent another hour or so in the various exhibits, opting to spend the money on the charming Lostman's River Ride (there's also a carousel and pedal boats if one is interested). Speaking of transportation, Zoo Miami used to offer a monorail to get guests from one end of the property to the other. Because it has been retired, the decision was made to offer Rydables, which are animal-shaped ECVs that can be rented based on time used. While a nice idea in theory, they seemed to be used mostly by teens with no regard for pedestrian traffic, so I was constantly having to be aware of them coming up behind me out of fear of getting into a collision with one. Great in theory; less so in execution. If you're a lover of animals, there isn't much reason not to visit.

    Amazing
We visited in august 2023. This zoo is large there is a lot of walking but it is mostly flat. We did the giraffe feed which is just a walk up which you pay an amount and get to feed the giraffes, it was definitely one of the highlights of our holiday. The staff are very friendly and it is a really nice and clean zoo.

    A must do
A must if visiting Miami. It's not the first, second, or third thing you think of when visiting Miami but it should be up there. The zoo is very large and well kept up. It's over 750 acres compared to the San Diego Zoo at 100 acres. The walking paths are wide with lots of little areas to stop and rest. There are multiple playgrounds and eating areas. Our favorite area (despite being Florida natives) was actually the Everglades area. Seeing animals I see all the time I thought would be no big deal, bit was it arranged so nicely with little cool things (like a clear slide in the otter area). We spent 4.5hrs and missed all of the Asia section and none of the zoo keeper talks. Expect to spend all day here and highly consider the bike rentals. The only downside of the zoo is it's so far from Miami downtown or other more northern parts of MDC, but worth the trip, especially with a little one!

Large zoo, and lots of fun.
This is a vey large, well laid out zoo with lots of animals in pretty large enclosures. Unfortunately, quite a few of the animals were absent or hiding (or on vacation?), but the majority were there. You can rent family bike carts if you want to save all the walking it requires. We allotted three hours before our flight home, but found ourselves rushing through the final continent, so give yourselves four hours if doing it all on foot. We also saw the critter show which was cute and showcased some birds and a serval.

    Huge Zoo
What a zoo! This zoo is HUMONGOUS and has lots of great animals to see. Getting a bike taxi is highly recommended because if you walk it you won't be able to see as much. Some of the exhibits and attractions weren't running or didn't seem to be open (maybe they're waiting for summer?) but we were happy enough to ride our bikes around. For what it's worth, it isn't really spelled out anywhere how many people can fit in one bike taxi. There's room for a child to sit in the middle between two adults (in addition to the front seats). This would have saved us some money had we known, as we rented two instead of one. Get there early so you can park towards the front.

Great fun but endless money making
Great family fun day. Tickets were OK price wise. However, lots of additional costs. Would recommend hiring a pedal bike/ taxi to see everything. This was also a fun experience. Aminal feeding was also a big hit. Lots of animals to see but a big number of empty enclosures too. Very early closing time given the cost. Some employees in the gift shop were a little clueless

    Great place to visit!
Lovely zoo. So many cool animals and the way the exhibits are created you feel like you could touch the animals! There with a lot of things to see and do. Wear sneakers and bring water bottles! It cost us $130 for a family of six.

Don't leave Miami without seeing Zoo Miami
It was a perfect weather day to go to the zoo, even if just for an hour. That was all the time we had, but it was worth it. This zoo is huge! 750 acres, one of the largest in Florida. You have to be in top physical shape to walk it all. I would have to do it in several visits. We did see the flamingos, which was incredible. Such graceful birds. Next time, we will do another section of the Zoo.

    Wow! Great Visit!
Wow! Zoo Miami exceeded my expectations over and over. We easily spent 5 hours strolling and admiring. We saw the tiger, elephants, chimps, girillas, lions, otters and so much more. I was enthralled by the trees and plants all through the zoo. I saw a Rainbow Eucalyptus, Poinciana and scores of others. Hydration stations to fill your water bottle are nicely spaced so you can stay hydrated. We also had Pina Colada Icees to help cool down. Almost all of the animals were not only visible, but active as well. TIP: Check out the flamingo mud nests. You will see some sitting on them at the entrance..

    What a Zoo-perb experience!
This review is rather late, but we went in January 2024 to the Miami Zoo and paid for the VIP Tour. It may be slightly pricey, but it was totally worth it in our opinion. We had very limited time due to getting off a cruise ship and heading to the airport. We met Paul our tour guide and he was so knowledgeable and welcoming. The golf cart ride saved our legs and we got to see more of the animals faster than if we had walked. It was great that the animals have the ‘public’ area to the front, but also have areas where they can’t be seen, so they have some ‘downtime’. Feeding the giraffes, seeing the elephants up close as well as a sleeping koala was a very special honour. Would definitely recommend the experience!

We love visiting zoos and have been to many zoos across the United States. This was probably the largest zoo we have ever been to in terms of distances walked.

Because it is such a large zoo, many of the animals have large enclosures, which is a good thing, but it is quite a haul between exhibits.

The distances are so great they rent bicycle carts, which I have never seen at any other zoo. The bicycle carts work here because the walking paths in the zoo are very wide.

If you have little ones, make sure you either have a stroller or rent the bicycle carts. The bicycle cart rentals are pricey ($39 for small and $54 for large for three hours), so keep that in mind when budgeting for this zoo.

If looking to save on admission, look online for discounts. Currently, Mondays have adult admission for $10 and they were discounting admission by $3 on all other days online.

The zoo exhibits themselves were spectacular and most seemed new. Favorites for us were the Amazon exhibits featuring a Jaguar and a Harpy Eagle and the large aviary called Wings of Asia. The zoo is also beautifully landscaped with tropical plants.

Would highly recommend going to this zoo on a cool and/or cloudy day due to the amount of walking involved and there being very few indoor exhibits. One of the weirdest things about this zoo is that you aren’t pestered by seagulls or pigeons while dining outside. Instead, there are many ibis ready to snatch any food that falls to the ground.

Zoo is located far from major tourist areas and is on the southwest side of Miami. About a half hour from South Beach if no traffic.

I have been cross country quite a bit and have gone to many zoos and this is one that stands out for me. It is very BIG distance wise but I love that because the animals have decent size habitats. I walk it because I want the exercise and its still the best way to see the place. But for those that have problems getting around there is a monorail, tram and pedal carts that can be rented. This place is value for the money, I have seen smaller places priced the same and if you have kids you can spend all day here. It took me 4 hours and that was only stopping twice to have a snack and drink. If you have kids there are several play areas where you can take a break thus making a day of it. This zoo has many animals and you will surely come across some that you have never seen before. I would definitely go in morning and get the bulk done before it gets warm, I fortunately have gone here in the Dec/Jan months so have never dealt with the heat. Great place for the whole family!

A Zoo well worth visiting with a great variety of animals in natural sittings. There is plenty of walking. A tram ($5.00 cost per person) makes several stops, with descriptive narration, monorail was out of service, and is well worth using. There are also four wheel bicycles for rent. It truly ranks in the top 5% of zoos in the world. You will not be disappointed. We visited on a week day and it was not crowded. Parking is free. The only issue was the long line to purchase entry tickets. Life size dinosaurs of all different varieties that moved and "spoke" were on display in many parts of the zoo for a limited time and were very realistic.

We arrived at about 11:00 AM on a Wednesday. The parking lots are huge but there were few visitors that day. We purchased Seniors tickets ($17.21 + tax) and all day tram tickets at $5.each.

This is a magnificent and expansive property. There are four main areas, Asia, Australia, Amazon and Africa, displaying the animals of each region. The animals range over their enclosures at will so they may not be visible when you are nearby. We found quite a few displays closed or vacant. During our visit on a Wednesday we were fortunate that there were few visitors but this resulted in most of the main food outlets being closed. The monorail was also closed but a "tram" was substituted. Of particular interest for the next short while are the animated dinosaurs that are display throughout the grounds.

Because of its size and numerous exhibits allow at least four hours to explore.

I live about 3 hours away from Miami, we always go every time we get an opportunity to go to the Zoo. The animals are well taken care of and the exhibits are really nice. You can walk the Zoo it takes 4-5 hours or you can rent a bike. There are plenty of places to eat and get things to drink but I would bring my own water though it can get very expensive. Don't forget to bring sunscreen!

I visited the Zoo because of my children, however I am not a zoo fan, because I think the animals need to be free in their natural habit, or at least living with more of the same specie.
The Zoo is divided in world sections, like Africa, Australia, Asia, with animals according to the geographical area.
The regular Fee to entrance is $ 30 USD but you can buy the Meal package for $ 39, and get the meal at the oasis restaurant after noon.
You can book a bike for 2 or more people, it will make it easier to move around, specially if you are coming with little kids.

The Zoo has reasonable areas for big animals, like elephants, antilopes or lions, even for the Birds, however in the Australia section, there is a Koala and another animal in a small room each one, which I think that's not nice for some one who is goint to be lockdown for the rest of his life, at least they should be with animals of the same specie in bigger areas, to make lees stressful their lifes.
There is also a big turtle at the snake area, living in a small container, this little creature bearly moves....

Anyway, is just my opinion,.. But I think is OK for families

It is quite an interesting long walk with a number of animals.
However, you can rent a multi-person bike (you have to leave your license with the rental place) and make the visit more fun.
Also, 2 "free" photos were offered on entering the zoo that you collect on leaving, but on leaving you are presented with a small book on the zoo with the photos for $36.

My children had a great time at the Miami Zoo. During our trip to Florida, we were looking for activities for the kids. We purchased our tickets online, and the park was not as crowded, which was ideal for our visit. We attempted to rent a bicycle to ride around the park, but they were all booked for the entire two hours. We chose to take the tram ride around the Zoo. The ride lasted 45-50 minutes, with the conductor explaining each animal that passed by. The ride took us behind the park for the first 5 minutes, so there wasn't much to see. It was a pleasant experience for the children, and it beats walking. Other activities that can be done while walking through the water park and feeding the giraffes include viewing the animals in an enclosed rock dome. There is an activity area in an enclosed building at the zoo's entrance that was a fun experience for the kids with virtual butterflies, a maze, and other activities.

It's been 17 years since my last visit to Zoo Miami and my how things have changed (and improved) here since then. This has always been a large, well run zoo but it was even better with this latest visit. Price for admission is about on par with other zoos this size, though seniors do get a 25% off reduction. It can be a bit of a challenge to get here, especially on days when the traffic is heavy. But, it's worth the trip.

Usually, large zoos such as this one have zoo maps and sometimes animal footprints painted on the pathways so you know where you are going. This zoo does not have either, so it helps to print the zoo map from their website before you visit. Basically, Zoo Miami is broken down into three major pathways, with each route taking roughly two hours to cover on foot. As you enter, the flamingo exhibit is very nice and allows you get very close to these amazing birds. Just past this on the right is the exhibit for the Sumatran Tiger, another must see item. You can then go left, straight, or to the right into the various world zones, but be sure to cover all three thoroughly.

Our favorite exhibits included the jaguar exhibit which contains a cave that you can enter to see this magnificent cat up close if you are lucky. The two female African elephants are both 47 years old and put on their own little show if you time your visit when the trainer is feeding them. We also loved the Lowland Gorilla exhibit with it's two powerful silverback males, the painted wild dogs from Africa are a must see, and the precocious pygmy hippopotamus is quite entertaining and even used her water fountain jet by the pool as a personal bidet! Finally, the collection of adult and juvenile giraffes is equally impressive, and allows visitors to climb up a ramp onto a platform and feed them.

Zoo Miami offers a fair amount of shade, but on hot days you may want to take several breaks because there is a fair amount of walking here, or catch the tram if you prefer. COVID has shut down the zoo's monorail system, which hopefully will be operational again some day soon.

There are plenty of places to grab refreshments both near the entrance and on the various paths, and a nice gift shop can wrap your visit before exiting.

Suggestions for improvement would include re-introducing zoo maps when you pay for admission, color-themed painted animal tracks to better separate the zone you are in (similar to other large zoos like the Metro Toronto Zoo), and re-establishing the monorail system now that COVID is winding down.

Overall, this is a wonderful zoo and easily ranks among the top three that we have ever visited. It comes highly recommended.
