Overview
More
Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

The walk on the boardwalk allows you to see many birds and plants and trees in an old Florida setting! It is mostly shaded and when you visit the ponds, you see many of Florida wading birds very close to the observation deck. Bring your...More

There are two different routes you can walk on, and they meet up. Which was great for our family...some wanted the longer route while others did the short one, and we met at the connection point, which is also where lots of the wildlife are...More

We were a little late for the best time to visit. We saw very little in the way of birds. Birds that we see daily at home were abundant. No gators, very little in the way of flowering plants, no butterflies consequently. BUT we highly...More

We went with two adults and two kids 9 and 11. We had a great time. We told the kids that you have to go slow and pay attention as you're going through the sanctuary to see all the wildlife. We did get the binoculars...More

My first visit was informative and interesting. The volunteers are so helpful and their passion for their work shows. On my second visit the hurricane had destroyed several of the legendary cypress trees so I was sad. Please check for the best time to see...More

Amazing walk on their boardwalk! Saw red shouldered hawks, little green Herons, little blue herons, a raccoon and alligators! There was so much more that we saw. The second half of the boardwalk is nicely shaded. If you take the short cut and turn left...More

My wife loves animals and this place really appealed to her. As she put it, its the opposite of the zoo. Instead of the animals in the cage for us to gawp at, we are on a boardwalk through their natural habitat seeing them at...More

Even when the season has not been great for the wood storks there is still plenty to see. It can be spectacular when the wood storks are abundant.

There were guided tours and very informative; we went at it alone and it was about 2 hours plus, lots to read and see and worth every minute. Plan on about 3 hours, there is so much to take in!
