Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary is a 13,000 acre Preserve. The Sanctuary is open daily from 7-5:30 with last admission at 4:30 pm. Visitors will find a gentle, pristine wilderness that dates back more than 500 years. A 2.25 mile boardwalk meanders through pine flatwoods, wet prairie, around a marsh and finally into the largest old growth Bald Cypress forest in North America. These impressive trees, relatives of the redwood, tower 130 feet into the sky and have a girth of 25 feet. Their massive branches are draped with mosses, lichens, bromeliads and ferns. The forest is also home to alligators, otters, white-tailed deer and red-bellied turtles. A wide variety of wading birds, songbirds, raptors and the fabulous Painted Bunting can be seen throughout the year. Photo opportunities are available at every turn of the boardwalk trail.

On our family vacation to Marco we decided to take a day off from the beach and take the nearly one hour drive to Corkscrew. What a great experience. It's an easy 2 mile walk on the bog above the swamp. We took our time so the walk lasted about 2 hours. We saw hawks, lizards, egrets, raccoons, many alligators,... More

Our admission was for two consecutive days so we visited twice. The boardwalk physically is second to none. I recommend going very early in the morning and do bring binoculars. Birding requires quiet and patience ..the facility does a fine job with their very helpful volunteers and signage (including laminated cards which are posted as needed on the board walk).... More

This is a great down day destination. Don't rush and take time to really look around. The boardwalk is a little over two miles long and winds through the sanctuary in a loop. It can get buggy, so be prepared. $3 binoculars rental worth it. This was our second visit - you can see different things depending on time of... More

We arrived at Corkscrew Swamp at 7 am on a weekday and walked the entire boardwalk....about 2 1/2 miles. We only saw 5 other folks the entire time. So beautiful and serene! The swamp has very little water these days so we did not see any alligators but we did see dozens of birds. Highly recommend!

My husband and I spent 4 hours here, from the Education Center to the 2.5 mile boardwalk. We saw birds, lizards, alligators and owls. Trees and flowers in bud and bloom. It was absolutely a refreshing day. Just stopping to listen to the grass blow and smelling the fresh air. It is a nice change from the hustle and bustle... More

A prolonged lack of rain had caused the swamp to dry out. This meant that many of the larger wading birds that would normally be present had moved on. Still saw gators, snakes, owls, egrets, herons, warblers, woodpeckers, etc. It is not a place to run around taking selfies. Take your time and even when conditions are less that perfect... More

We went for the special Friday evening visit, and loved it! The sounds that now come out with the darkness while wonder over the boardwalk are awesome. We did this with my visiting mom from Holland, and she loved it too.
