Although we had walked around by the chapel and explored the old cemetery, we decided to attend the ecumenical service at the Chapel by the Sea on Sunday. Sitting outside under the trees, listening to the waves on the beach, and watching the minister preach his sermon both to the inside congregation, and out the window to the outside searts... More

Bike riding by this little chapel and my wife and I have a tradition a saying a prayer of thanks wherever we go; from great European cathedrals to modest chapels. Think God is everywhere but it's good to hedge your bets. We stopped here and said our thanks. When we left we ran into the Minister. He was a lovely,... More

The Chapel and the cemetery are well marked with historical information and a very interesting stop on this small island.

This Chapel is a very small, simple structure tucked away among large trees. There are also plenty of Sea-Grape Bushes all around. It only seats 60 people, and the surrounds are quiet and peaceful – very appropriate for a place of worship for the locals. At a stone’s throw, there is the Cemetery which is managed by this Chapel. This... More

Next to Captiva's Library, also a very well kept secret, the cemetery reveals a more realistic side of Captiva than the multimillion dollar homes, ocean access and great seashell hunting. There is some history here. People actually live here and settled here. Very small, but quaint. The rolling surf is a constant calming sound.

This building is the original schoolhouse on Captiva. It was transformed into a very picturesque chapel that still functions today. Adjacent is a graveyard for some of the founding fathers of the island and their relatives.

This lovely little chapel is steeped in history. The tiny adjacent cemetery has a poignant and haunting story. The Christmas service here was perfect--just perfect. We have driven by golf cart or car, but it would also be a wonderful place to stop while biking the island.
