We had hired a car from our hotel in Cap Cana and driven to this reserve and expected a lot more. At first we went to the entrance near Cueva Padre Nuestro (bear Bayahibe) but we decided that the entrance near the coast was probably better. On reflection, we should have stayed at the first location.

We parked at the end of the road after all of the hotels and went through a gate and along the side of a hotel. All a bit run down and uninviting.

After about 100 m you get to a few buildings but there is no information building and we were just pointed down a path. After about 250 m we came a cross a guy (official? ... who knows!) who relieved us of a very small entrance fee.

We walked for about a mile but gave up (we are 65+) as the humidity was building up and it started to rain heavily.

We did see some humming birds but, otherwise, the place was pretty sterile and uninteresting. Nobody offered to act as a guide.

We went to Padre Nuestra Cave - we just drove to the park, paid 200Pesos per person entrance, and then 1.4 km further at the park entrance met a guide who offers a full tour for free (plus tips) which was absolutely awesome. He took us through the whole park, showed us the local plants, took photos and most importantly helped us on the last cave where you can swim in the dark in refreshing waters. You can also see the carving of the indigenous people here in this cave.
Ramon (the Guide) is very knowledgable and friendly, we actually ended up giving him 1000 Pesos as a tip which was worth it.
Can highly recommend this for any nature lovers! Bring good shoes, mosquito spray, water and bathing suit- no need for snorkelling gear as it’s too dark to see much in the Cave. We spent a total of almost 3 hours here.

We walked here from our hotel, it's a bit of a trek, we came through Bayahibe town and walked down quite a busy road and found the entrance to the park - where you wouldn't expect it to be at all. It cost about £4 for entry, it was a nice peaceful walk through the park but pretty overgrown and nothing very special until you come to the cave - what a treat, very beautiful - take a good torch. There are bats in the cave and it is full of beautiful clear water which you can swim in. Headtorches would be perfect - we wished we had brought ours. When we got to the cave we were the only people there, it was definately worth a visit.

Both internally and along the beach this is an amazing, quiet, unexploited place. Just pay the minimal charge to the rangers to go in (local currency only) and take tons of water...

During second half of April had a great excursion (with Tui) to Isla Saona. The isle is very nice - very quiet - and upon our visit was not crowded at all. Great Experience on the isle and on the way to the place (with catamaran) as on the way back (with speedboat);

The water was a beautiful blue. We only just sailed by this beach, but it looked like a great place to sit and relax and enjoy.

Drive past all the hotels in Dominicus to the end of the road.Pass through wooden gates signed "Park of the East" onto a driveable track. After 200 yards park up above the beach near a rangers hut. Pay 250 pesos and walk through the forest on a good trail to Cueva del Puente. The cave system is massive and interesting but take torches . Return via the beach trail.

Hubby and I had been curious for years about the National Park of the East. We had been on many Saona excursions. We were curious about the "cave" that was within walking distance of our hotel in Dominicus (Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus).We packed some bug spray, water and sunscreen and off we hiked down the street. For anyone familiar with Dominicus, the entrance to the park is next to Cadaques. We found the "ranger" station. We had done some research ahead of time and knew the cost was $5.00 US. The ranger tried to charge us $25. We gave him our ten dollars and I made him fill out a receipt.

The main problem with this "attraction" is the hike to get to the cave. We walked two miles from the ranger station; first on a very sandy trail (we could see the beach and evidence that horses had been on the trail recently), and then on a VERY rocky and somewhat precarious trail to the entrance to the cave. I am not the most graceful and agile person, so I spent a lot of this part of the hike holding on to my hubby's backpack. There were a few places to stop and rest, but no restroom facilities. The cave itself is interesting. It is a dry cave and we did see a few bats flying around.

Don't go expecting to see really great foliage on the trail. Pretty scruffy for the most part. I'm glad we did it, but I don't see us doing it again. I would like to try Padre Nuestro near Bayahibe, because I have heard it is a pretty good activity. We would probably hire a guide, too.

Next time we come we have to explore this place, because it looked so amazing from our boat when we sailed by, that I just wanted to skip the Saona Island and go there. So I promise to visit it next time and write more about it. It looked like Heaven.
