You can light a candle for $4, I payed via Venmo scanning the QR code. They church is very well kept and they even have a small gift shop.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten October 31, 2023
- betsnowTucson, Arizona2,128 contributionsStunning CathedralFor my decades worth of traveling this globe… I am always drawn to cathedrals and churches. This one did not disappoint and is absolutely stunning inside. Rich in history and just as deep in beauty, this is a must see while in St. Augustine.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 4, 2023
- Paul M60 contributionsA beautiful cathedralA beautiful cathedral. There is a recitation of the Rosary 1/2 hour prior to the weekday Mass. This was the first time since the covid scamdemic that both species of the Eucharist were offered at Mass. The stained glass is quite nice. We did not take the tour. Will do it next time.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten December 29, 2023
- journalmytripsGeorgia730 contributionsA lovely cathedralIf you are walking around the historic area, the Cathedral is a very nice place to stop for a few quiet minutes. Once inside you may see the beautiful altar, the side altars, the choir loft and the stained glass windows. Take a couple of minutes to sit or kneel in one of the pews for quiet reflection.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 19, 2024
- EdwelshNorth Canton, Ohio7,262 contributionsCatholic historyThe oldest Catholic parish from 1565 had this rebuilt Church finished in 1797 that became a Cathedral in 1870. Truly remarkable! It’s beautiful inside and out. We sat peacefully for awhile and lit a candle in this little slice of heaven.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten February 21, 2024
- Alyeska13The Netherlands621 contributionsBeautiful Mass in a cool old churchWe attended Mass here on Sunday. The music was lovely, and the church itself is AMAZING! It’s so wonderful to be able to visit such an old church in the United States. The kids were excited about the unusual decorations. It’s very different than the modern looking Catholic church we attend at home and is much more like the older ones we’ve visited throughout Europe, New Orleans, and Puerto Rico. The pictures don’t do it justice! It’s very nice to be able to go somewhere very different than our regular church and still feel at home. The priest gave a very nice homily too.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten March 18, 2024
- zpcscMiami, Florida635 contributionsBeautiful Cathedral!Such a lovely Cathedral. Attended Divine Mercy Sunday mass and right after mass they did the Divine Mercy Chaplet which I wasn't expecting, it was wonderful. It does get full. During the week they only have mass at 7:00 a.m. but it stays open throughout the day. They also have a great gift shop. The Cathedral is located right in the heart of Old Town very easy access.Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten April 13, 2024

Located in Ols Saint Augustine, the congregation of this church dates back to 1565 while its construction was in 1793-1797. Its architecture is Spanish inspired (a mix of mission and neoclassical) and features beautiful stained glass windows, paintings, tiles, and woodwork.
It is well maintained and ornate in the interior and well-groomed grounds.
There is no entry fee and well worth the visit.

The interior with the beamed ceilings, painted scenes on the walls, golden statuary, marble communion rail....just the way things used to be......What a place to come and pray. We did not take a guided tour, but rather went in and sat down in one of the pews and absorbed the grandness with our own senses. I love visiting old churches You can feel the love that went into building them..

Even if one is not Catholic, it is well worth the time attending a mass. The service is very impressive as is the interior of the church. Although the decoration of religious detail is fairly simple, the red and gold ceiling lifts the viewers' eye heavenward and is stunning.

Absolutely awe inspiring. The beauty of the Alter and the statuary is unsurpassed. Stain glass windows are each a work of art. You do not need to be religious to enjoy the architecture of the Basilica. I would recommend for adults and older children who can fully appreciate all there is to see.

Catholic or non-Catholic, it is a moving experience to visit the Nation's oldest parish, now the seat of the St. Augustine Roman Catholic diocese. Regardless of one's faith, one appreciates the opportunity to come in contact with 500 years of history. The Cathedral Church is not huge or ornate, but in its simplicity, offers a place to refresh one's self spiritually and physically - St. Augustine, Florida, can be hot and humid. An attached religious goods store is convenient for those who would want a religious item for themselves or as a gift for someone.

Gorgeous church, inside and out. This was a nice respite from the heat and a welcome break from our running around town. The gentleman outside who invited us in let us know about the museum across the street as well, with its interactive exhibit on the city's history and clean restrooms, all for free. That was a hit with the kids and a highlight of the day.

Built and rebuilt this basilica has unique wooded architecture and statuary. it maintains its eccliastical aura despite the tourist off St George street. Unique statue of the breast feeding Madonna reminds one of her virgin birth as there also is a statue of a fecund Madonna.
The Cathedral has a sequestered respectful chapel with the eucharistic worship possible.
This is a working church for more than 200 years

This is a truly special place, a worthy stop for any Christian. It feels like a true house of worship that has survived tumultuous past of the city. Stop, say a prayer and feel the history. Buy something from their gift shop, they are one of the very few places to allow visitors without a fee.

We signed up for the paid tour, and boy, were we glad we did! Our guide, Peter, was a wealth of information, and even for four lifetime Catholics we learned so much! It was wonderful to take our time and really explore the entire church, including the back room and choir areas. The art and architecture was amazing. Peter even started us off by going across the street to talk about the "real" bells! This tour was a highlight of our visit to St. Augustine.

This was the only church I got to see the inside of during our time downtown. The others were closed (due to Covid?)
The outside of this church is a bit understated, but the inside is really peaceful and pretty. The ceiling is painted, and the front of the church quite fancy.
Everyone was quiet and respectful while I was there. Several people were praying. For that reason, I probably wouldn’t bring in young children unless they can be very quiet inside.

I know on the website it stated that the tours had been cancelled. It's been awhile since I checked the website, have things changed for the better there? Have they started doing the tours again?
Written July 26, 2020
we only noticed doors are/were open at mass times.....we were greatful for that experience...when going to light a candle after mass, we noticed you couldn't do that anymore...so, we put our offering in that box by candles. mass was a lot shorter, since there were only 4 other people there.....but, I'm sure no tours....after mass we went to musicians hall of fame....but, mass was very meditative, which I felt we needed....time just to have peace and reflect.....

Can you do your own walk through of the Basilica? Times, price?
Written November 4, 2019
Yes you can. They do have paid guided tours as well.
Written February 12, 2020
How do you sign up in advance for the guided tours of the Cathedral? I looked on their website and didn't see it there or on Tripadvisor. We would like the paid tour. Thanks for your help! Mary
Written January 16, 2019
Nothing paid for in advance. Just show up and there's a docent inside that will assist. They only take gratuities for the tour
Written January 19, 2019
Pat G. No, you do not need a ticket. A collection will be taken up at the Offertory, but it is absolutely voluntary. In short, it would not cost you a penny, unless you want to donate.

Will they have Christmas services?
Do you know at what times? Thank you.
Written December 4, 2016
I'm sorry we only visit in the summer. It's a fully functional church so I would say yes. You can always google their name.
Written January 12, 2017
Is it open on certain day and hours for the public to see inside?
Written May 17, 2015
It's open most days to visitors. Not sure of the times that it's open. It is closed to visitors during weddings or times of worship, so it's not open to visitors all of the time that it's open.
