Established in 1945, this wildlife refuge occupies one-third of Sanibel Island and is a prime spot for birdwatching. Fees are required for Wildlife Drive. Wildlife Drive is closed on Fridays. There's an extensive and informative FREE visitor center, a fantastic wildlife drive, tram tours, kayaking, fishing opportunities, picnic benches, and even a free scavenger hunt style game and wildlife spotting app (Discover Ding) if you prefer a self-guided tour.

I have been visiting National Wildlife Refuges in several different parts of the country and I found this place to be as good and well kept as any other. I think it's a great addition to the attractions here in Sanibel Island.

Unbelievable. Just beautiful. The information center was a wealth of information. I was a little disappointed that the tram ride had so few times available, but it is an outside vendor. The scenery is breathtaking. A must do on Sanibel.

Nicely kept, the drive through the refuge is a joy. My wife, two boys and me did it by bicycle and we enjoyed being able to stop at any moment to look around, take pictures and feed the no-see-ums.

Depends on how much you enjoy the outdoors. For my family a drive through the refuge with occasional stops along the roadway suffices. For us a couple of hours does the trick. If you are avid about the outdoors and getting... More
