We had a great time visiting. My favorite part. Was along some of the cells, they had names of some of the inmates, their crimes, and some back story. The staff told us about some areas of the prison that were supposedly haunted. It was a fun time!

Had some spare time while in Boise. The tour of the Old Penitentiary looked interesting....was not disappointed. The ladies at the front desk were very nice and helpful. I especially loved the cells that had a little bio of the past inmate. Interesting to read about them throughout the history of the Pen. The weapons exhibit was am amazing bonus! Huge collection with great details about the items. Some might think this alone would be a reason to visit. Very interesting and enlightening visit!

Chillingly sobering. Can imagine the anguish and suffering of those incarcerated there. The drop room was fascinating; why did we stop hanging people?

I had recently visited the former penitentiary in Philadelphia, and I was pleasantly impressed that Boise’s penitentiary was not a carbon copy experience; they complemented each other. Standing in the former cells was sobering: 2 people in a cell 24/7. Only one person could stand at a time; most of the day had to be spent in bed! Interesting how the inmates made toilet seats to give them a place to sit without crouching on a lower bunk or laying down. The staff were great and circulated. Be sure to see everything. I thought I had seen ‘Siberia’ (see other entries) but I had not ventured far enough behind the ‘cooler.’ I am glad I retraced my steps. The gift shop has additional information and posters. The prisoner personal histories are riveting. Many historically and socially relevant displays. There is an aspect of this restricted, unfamiliar lifestyle that will intrigue everyone: young or old, male or female.

Due to Covid there weren't guides available but the self guided tour was still very informative. Well preserved history of Idaho's penal system and worth the visit!
