I love how informative this place is about geothermal energy, what it is, how it is used and for how long, etc. Also this new room about carbfix, wow! I was so proud of Iceland during this visit!

If the source of energy in Iceland interests you at all, then this stop along the Ring Road is worth a visit. There are interesting educational exhibits, videos about carbon capture and sequestration, and a very nice viewing platform upstairs.

Even though it is very cool to hear and see how progressive and clean the powerplant works, we only got to see 3 short movies to explain the process and one floor with very few things to see for as much as 3.900 ISK (2 pers.). We were expecting a tour around the plant, at least to some degree, but the tour only consisted of walking two strairs.

You wouldn't think of a power plant as a highlight of a trip but it was so nicely presented and interesting.

Two things you realize about Iceland when you visit in the winter is the importance of being prepared to adapt to potentially changing weather and road conditions and the prevalence of warm building interiors even in the winter. The On Power Geothermal Exhibition provides a nice overview of the science behind Iceland's access of hot water and steam (used to create electricity). There is also an interesting film on work being done to turn carbon dioxide into rock. The displays are well done and one could read them without the tour and still understand the basics of how Iceland uses geothermal energy for electricity in addition to the direct access to hot water. However, we tour guide provided interesting details. We felt like we better understood Iceland's ability to adapt to its environment and the ready availability of warm building interiors after visiting this modern facility that is relatively close to the Golden Circle area.
