Full of hidden gems. Small rural villages and lovely winding roads. You might even get stuck on the roads with herds of cows. Amazing views over the valleys.

You could be forgiven for thinking you were in Switzerland rather than Spain. This westernmost part of the Picos de Europa mountains is absolutely gorgeous. Of course, access is by winding mountain road, but it's worth every minute of the torturous driving: the road itself gives plenty of glimpses of the beautiful mountains and valleys. We came in on AS339 from Sevares and it was spectacular. Even in August, we had the place virtually to ourselves. Came upon a village festival in Ambingue, which was delightful. Stopped for cider in Sellaño and at the visitor centre in San Juan: both recommended. Then climbed up and over to Viego. Spectacular views all the way.

We walked up the SO1 road from the visitors center for about three miles. Very little traffic, maybe 10 cars the whole time. Beautiful views of the surrounding mountains and valley.

This is a lovely area. When driving into the park you have sheer cliffs both sides ,a real gorge. The scenery is magnificent and you must beware of wild goats on the road also cattle

Beautiful place to do routes and it is not too crowded. If you like the mountains, do not hesitate to visit it.
