I was a little disappointed in this museum. After visiting the Surgeons' Hall in Edinburgh where I was completely disgusted but couldn't leave at the same time I was expecting an awful lot more. This museum is quite dated and the exhibits weren't all that engaging. There were a lot of instruments and some amazing murals but I was hoping... More

We took a 12 and 8 year old. Our 12 year old loved it, the 8 year old was a little scared of some of the things. You could easily spend hours in there if you read everything. Cool little shop with unique gifts. Definitely worth the $

This is a very educational experience. We learned a lot about the history of the medical field. There are plenty of things to see a read.

Not sure what I was expecting - the museum is quite dated: a lot of written detail with a few interesting exhibits, paintings and statues of renowned historical figures and a bizarre top floor installation that had nothing to do with the rest of the museum. Worth an hour's visit maybe - although quite expensive at $15. Maybe of more... More

My wife and I didn't know what we were missing. For years, we have walked past the International Museum of Surgical Science at 1524 North Lake Shore Drive, which is located only two blocks from our condominium on the Gold Coast. We admired the lakeside mansion and vowed several times to visit the museum. But it took an article in... More

Being a surgical nurse, I was disappointed in this museum as it seemed quite dated without engaging exhibits regarding surgery. There were some instruments and great murals commissioned in 1953 but I was hoping for more historical information on surgery and possibly a few specimens from surgery itself (the bowls of gallstones were nice and burr hole exhibit with skulls... I really liked this museum. It covers 4 floors with multiple exhibit rooms on each floor. Lots of large paintings depicting medical wards, surgical procedures, etc. adorn the walls and the art is quite good. Some of the murals are huge and span an entire wall. There is a little bit of everything and if you read everything you'd spend... More

This museum was very interesting. Lots to see, including a complete skeleton and an iron lung. The apothecary's shop was fascinating with an audio commentary about how he made his medications. Huge paintings of various operations - be careful if you are squeamish. The museum led us through the history of surgical procedures and we spent a couple of hours... More

This place was recommended to us and we caught a bus from downtown for a scenic ride north along the bay, only 15 minutes or so. It's a small museum in a lovely old Victorian mansion filled with the most bizarre tools and implements. We enjoyed a pleasant 45 minutes before bussing back to the city.

My husband and I are both in the medical field and had several people recommend this museum. The exhibits are educational and fascinating. It only takes about 2 hours to tour the entire museum. I just wish it was bigger.

Gold Coast
Located just north of The Loop, Gold Coast is one of Chicago’s most affluent and popular neighborhoods. The original Playboy, Hugh Hefner, once had a mansion here. In addition to prestigious hotels, historic mansions and luxury high-rise apartments, you’ll also find upscale specialty boutiques and Michelin-starred restaurants. Walk along Oak Street for your shopping fix and dance through the night along Rush Street. The Newberry Library is also a great stop to check out noteworthy exhibits and rare book collections.
