This was our last stop in killing more time before our flight. The 606 was a coverted railroad line that was turned into a 2.7 mile paved trail between Ridgeway Ave to Walsh Park.
We drove up along Ridgeway Ave which was the entrance for the West Trailhead.
Street parking was a little concerning given there were at least two abandoned cars that looked like were being stripped. As we walked closer to the entrance a Chicago police car was parked in front with his engine running.
However once we started walking down the pathway we found it to be well maintained and landscaped. We started seeing more joggers, bikers and people out for walks.
We followed it for awhile walking past a number of older factory buildings (abandoned, in use or converted to storage) and residential homes. There were also a number of access points along the way that allowed an easy entry or exit from the 606.
However being away from downtown in a residential suburb meant the it did not have the same impact as the Highline in NYC which weaved its way through downtown and more developed areas that also include shopping malls, restaurants, and artworks.

Wow, Chicago just out did the High Line in NYC with a great elevated walk through the near north neighborhoods. Not just a stroll through upscale Chelsea, but a great hike, bike ride, or jog from one end of town to the other.

A decade in the planning, the 2.7-mile-long park/path was built on an abandoned railroad viaduct. It crosses four neighborhoods, offering a great way to see areas not often on Loop and lakefront "tour" routes. Rent a bike and pedal its length and back--or walk the path in segments. You can access via the Blue Line "L" at Western or Damen. Note how the path meanders up and down to help provide access for the disabled. Little seating available, except in the parks that are scattered along its length. And enjoy a cross section of Chicago's industrial history, through the remaining buildings of such companies as Ludwig drums, Harmony guitar, Playskool toys, Colonial chairs, and Felt & Tarrant, which made one of the world's first calculators, the Comptometer.

We did got some divvy bikes and did ride the highline. It was mid-end April, so area was not that green yet, but various possibilities to stop and enjoy the view. Perfect for walking and running as well. Nice developed area. Great area to escape from the centre.

My friends and I rented bikes and biked the 606 for an afternoon. It was easily accessible from the Damon blue line, but there are other access points, too. The trail had a lot of walkers and bikers, from kids to adults. The trail was beautifully landscaped and even had bike repair stations.

The 606 is built on an old elevated train railbed, is beautifully landscaped and goes through a number of very different neighborhoods in Chicago. The view from the 606 is great and quite different from down on the street. The walkway is 2.7 miles from end to end so it is possible to get some good exercise in while seeing some great scenery. I don't know what it is like at night, but during the day I don't think you need to be concerned about security. It runs East/ West with the eastern most point being Walsh Park and the western most point being just off of Ridgeway Ave.

This above ground scenic trail is brand new and an awesome way to see parts of the city. Whether you live free or vacationing, you will not be disappointed! Great views. 3 miles each way but if you can't, you don't need to do the whole thing, though we did! Start in wicker park. Loved this!

As a Chicagoan I was excited when The 606 was built as it's a great concept to reuse old train tracks for public park space.
That said, The 606 is just ok. Maybe if you live in the surrounding neighborhoods it's nice for running or walking, but if you're a tourist there is no need to go out of your way to visit The 606.
It is still underdeveloped, which I hope changes but at this point it's rather bleh. The overlooks are rather dull, there's not much landscape, and there isn't much "life" to the path, other than a couple lanes for walking and biking. As for the lanes, they are way too narrow for bikes and pedestrians. It's a pain, near impossible, to ride your bike when it is crowded.
The 606 is no way near as nice as The High Line in NYC. The High Line has phenomenal views, is a lot higher up, has great landscaping, and art. The 606 is comparison goes east-west across neighborhoods that are nice, but have nothing for tourists. And even though I recommend tourists to experience the "real" Chicago and check out the neighborhoods, a venture out to the 606 will likely leave you underwhelmed.

Visited on a Sunday afternoon and loved the utility of the space. Had a dog with us and had no spatial issues as we watched joggers, roller bladers and others go by on the path. Great idea!

As a foreign tourist, I don't think this attraction is necessary as part of your travel plans. We went there just to get away from the city and we thought we can get great views of the skyline. But it's just a regular walkway for local residents in the area. We were able to walk the full trail in less than an hour.

Yes there are the people above are wrong. There is on on the west end last ramp, Ridgeway. The back of the YMCA are two public bathrooms opened until 11pm. The second one is The Trail Head Apartments at Western. Go up the ramp, you will find four public bathrooms. F,M,Unisex,Handicapped. There is also a water fountain to refill your bottle, and a bike station with Air and tools to cater to your bike. Have fun and be safe. If biking please watch for kids and fur babies 🐶
