The De Immigrant is an authentic working Dutch windmill in the heart of the Midwest. It’s run by a team of volunteers from the town. It’s best to visit on days when the weather allows for it to be running, but is a great place to see whenever.

De Immigrant Windmill was built in Holland then moved here and reconstructed by skilled craftsmen from the Netherlands. All wooden structure held together with wooden dowels. They grind six different grains using the original stone wheels powered by the wind. The two employees were well informed about the origin, history and uses of windmills in Europe. An amazing structure which we toured and surprised to discover in the middle of Illinois in a small town settled by Dutch Immigrants. Next door is a museum with many working small scale models built and donated by an Engineer who lived in Indiana.…

Beautiful windmill right next to the river, makes for very nice pictures. There is a museum across the street that was closed when I was there. (after 4:00 p.m.) I plan on going back so I can see that also.

Loved going to the Windmill. The Docents were very knowledgeable and explained the operations of the windmill. How it was constructed and what purpose the windmill was for the town.

We travel a lot for work & the topic of our home town often comes up. I always make sure to tell others about our wonder authentic, functioning windmill & the festival in May. We've enjoyed the tour, how friendly knowledgable the millers are. The setting at the end of one of the main streets into town makes for great photos.…
