Neat piece of history. Oldest house in Galena

Sign says open at 10:30, but tours aren't until 11am and seem to run every 1/2 hour. A very informative tour of the oldest home in Galena. At the Belvedere we purchased a dual... read more

If my memory is accurate, this building, which was originally a trading post with the living quarters on top, is the oldest stone building in Illinois. It was built by a Mr. Dowling in the 1800's, was vacant and fell into disrepair over 50 years time, but when it was purchased, restored and now serves as a tourist attraction. We... More

The oldest stone house in Illinois. The way that it was constructed, fallen into disrepair and then saved is quite a story. Our guide did an amazing job. It was as though we were in the 1800's

It's the oldest house in Galena. Very rustic, interesting. Very much what you would expect to see. Tour is about 20 min.

I think we went into house in between tour times due to a fluke of misinformation and an unlocked door. The tour guide was so nice and gave us our own tour. It was very interesting.

It was interesting to go through the home and see the inside of Galena's oldest home and see a bunch of artifacts from the past, but the tour guide wasn't that great and rushed us through the house. It was a little interesting, but not worth the entrance fee.

This house really give you a flavor for how things were done nearly 200 years ago. This was considered a large home for the time it was built
