We happened to arrive on what would have been Mr. Washburne's 200th birthday. Nice tour by nice people. Open Fridays only. Tours are free, but donations are accepted. a nice bit of history.

This was my favorite place in Galena. The history will blow you away! It is only open on Fridays, so plan accordingly. This is a "don't miss" historical site when in Galena.

Our tour guide was thorough and knowledgable. The house is faithfully restored to much of its original state. The 30 minute tour was just enough to make us want to learn more about Mr. Washburne.

Last time we were here , the State was working on restoring this home. It it the site of one of Galenas founding fathers. Very successful political figure in the House of Representatives and Ambassador to France. A pallbearer for President Lincoln and close friend of President Grant, he purchased Grant's home when the President retired penniless. Part of seven... More

This was a wonderful chance to get some history in on a HOT day! Was cool in home. Tour guide was not big on dates, but shared what she knew of the family and how they lived. Fascinating and lovely house to tour. There is a story about the privacy walls, so the servants could not hear the top secret... More

We visited here while visiting Galena over Memorial Day Weekend. The staff was friendly and the tour was informative. If you are planning on seeing Ulysses' home then you should add this to your list as well. Well worth the visit. It is right across the street from Alice Bed and Breakfast.

Across the street from Alice's Snyder B + B. It is the home of one of the men who invented the Republican Party and was a great supporter of Abraham Lincoln. The house has at least six top quality white marble fireplaces on the first floor. We did not have time to tour the six bedroom second floor. The highlight... More

We got a very personal tour with great stories and history of both the family and the house. No charge for the tour - donations encouraged. Be aware it is only open for a limited time on Fridays - check the website. Highly recommend this tour if you love historic homes - ties to both Grant & Lincoln.
