First up, this was the highlight of our two-week holiday for my boys (aged 12 and 14) who loved clambouring on the rocks. Why only 4 stars? From the reviews I thought it was going to be bigger, more expansive and more impressive. We explored it pretty quickly, so then filled in some time going on a lovely walk in the neighbouring woods. Definitely worth a visit though if you're in the area

Forget about the gorges you saw in other countries. This is completely different. Belgium's only gorge is small and pretty. I recommend to make a walk in the surroundings instead of just driving up to the gorge take picture and go back home. Nature is very beautiful there, but be careful for ticks.

Belgium is a small yet great country, and so are our canyons!
West of the river Meuse, close to the French border in the Fagne-Famenne area, you find the nature parc 'Viroin-Hermeton'. Among tourists, this area is less known but among lovers of nature, the Viroinvalley has a serious reputation: Viroin stands for calcium-grazelands full of wild orchids, many kind of rare mosses, rare insects and reptiles. In the hills, nature has formed hundreds of crevices, minicanyons and even grottos. The ecosystem and biodiversity in this nature area earns its spot among the richest in the world with a botanic welth of up to 60 kinds of plants per m².

1) You can reach this area via the town of Nismes (area code 5670, via E420-R5 to Philippeville, direction Couvin, exit for route N939 direction via Mariembourg to Nismes). Several trails start at the church in the centre of Nismes, a small but typical town. Tourism office with further info is at the other side of the square, opposite the church.

2) Trials:
--The yellow rectangle takes you trough 7.5km of forest, grazeland, orchids, steep hills, panoramic 'Falconrock', and of course the canyons.
--The 9km red/white rectangle marks the beautiful trial 'Les Abannets', following the river.

3) Bring boots or sturdy walkingshoes, a walkingstick can be of help on the steeper parts. These trails are not suitable for strollers, nor wheelchairs. Dogs are allowed on a leash.
4) other things in this area: steamtrain Mariembourg 5660 toTreignes (and back), railroadmuseum in 5670 Treignes, grottos of Neptune in 5660 Petigny.

As someone who's traversed the majestic expanses of the Grand Canyon in the U.S., I went to the Belgian Grand Canyon with a smirk and a raised eyebrow. After a bumpy ride through picturesque Ardennes, I arrived at Fondry Des Chiens, only to find that this “canyon” is more of a charming photo op.

After a two-minute stroll from the parking lot, I was greeted by rocky edges that felt more like a gentle dip than a breathtaking gorge. Families posed for selfies, and I couldn’t help but chuckle.

However, it’s not all bad! The surrounding hiking trails are lovely, winding through lush forests and leading to the quaint town of Nismes. This is your spot if you're looking for a quaint Sunday outing surrounded by nature. Don’t expect a rival to the Grand Canyon; it’s more of a “grand mini-canyon.”

No, you dont spend hours there and yes you see similar things in many mid to far away countries but hey, for Belgium you can do a wonderful astonishing walk from Nismes church, red route 4km (2km back and forth) or yellow route does a round 7km, well signalled, great experience!

A unique place in Belgium, the Fondry des Chiens is a geological accident that produced a complex area of rocks shaped as a canyon. Although small, the place is deep. The place is not secured and can be dangerous, especially for kids. Make sure you wear appropriate hiking shoes. Trails lead to the bottom of the canyon. On the surrounding plains, you'll find Nordic Walking trails and a pic-nic area next to the small car park. Although fires are strictly forbidden, we found evidence of campfires, probably people coming at night to enjoy the sheer beauty of the place. The lovely city of Nismes is a 5 minutes ride away, you'll find all you need food and drinkwise.

This unusual rock formation and surrounding chalk downland rich in flowers favouring chalk grassland is well worth a visit. There are pleasant views to the south.

We saw pictures of "Le fondly des chiens" online and since we love nature and a good hike we decided to visit is, although it is a fair ride of almost 2 hours. The weather was good so we had a great hike, although admittedly after 2 km we wondered if we were at the right place, since nothing pointed at the majestic cliffs and canyons we suspected form the pictures. In fact we were heading to another road! When we made a bend however we saw the fondry and along the track a few other nice features. Interesting, but far from what we had expected. In that sense there are far more impressive landscape features in Belgium and nearby Luxemburg, such as the Ninglinspo trail and MĂĽllerthal.

Park your car near the church (or the tourist information office) and follow the red signs. The signs starts in the statue’s park behind the church. It’s a round route of 4 km, from the village to the canyon and back. Easy walk, suits for children also.
