If you are looking for the accommodation near Sary Chelek Lake, I must recommend you a guesthouse “English Spoken” run by Sabira. It is located in a small village Arkyt, just a step from the lake (ok, it takes 3 hours hike to reach the lake). Sabira is a grandma who studied English years ago in Osh. After days of pantomime, it was great to hear some known words. She will prepare you a simple breakfast and a dinner. She will wake up at 6 am and stop a Marshrutka to Osh for you. This guesthouse also has a great toilette! She asked me to post her add:

“Dear foreign guests! I invite you to my guesthouse. I live in Kyrgyzstan Sary-Cheleck Reserve. My name is Sabira. I know English language. Many foreign guests came to my guesthouse. My guesthouse is 1 km after the 1st entrance. There is written: “Guest House English Spoken” on the left side of the road. My phone is 0772 60 79 67.”

Both the lake and the village are a bit hidden and not so easy to access, but are worth to visit. You will experience pristine Kyrgyz warmth and simplicity (or poverty), and beautiful untouched nature.

Please, take a taxi. It’s cheap. Just make sure the driver is sober.

Kirgizstan has a lot of gorgeous scenery places to visit. Sary Chelek Biosphere Reserve is one of them. We visited this place on 2 day trip in October 2021. We had accommodation in Arkyt town near Sary Chelek Lake. All 2 days in Sayr Chelek were interesting and memorable. We visited main lake Sary Chelek and some small lakes near big one. Hiking in apple and walnut groves with a lot of cows, horses and great views is awesome.

But in October the weather was quite cold, especially during the nights. Temperature was below zero degree Celsius. You should consider this aspect of your trip in autumn to Sary Chelek.

In my opinion, Sary Chelek Biosphere Reserve is one of the must see places in Kirgizstan and in the whole Central Asia.

Nice place to enjoy great views on the way towards the lake as well as the surrounding wallnut forests. The water in crystal clear lake is tempting and definitely worthy to try. We were charged 400 som per person park entrance fee + 100 som for own car. Locals pay less. Though rather expensive, it was our understanding the entrance fee included camping if we wanted. We also got some extras - there was a local wedding taking place at the Lake.

Myself and two friends organised our three night / four day trek through CBT Kyrgyzstan.

We were picked up in Osh by our lovely driver and had a comfortable 8 hour journey in a 4x4 (stopping for lunch on the way). We arrived in Kyzyl-Kol village, where we stayed in the driver's home and were fed huge amounts of delicious food. The next day, we set off on our hike, with two very friendly guides and two horses. The driver took our main luggage on to the cabin where we would later stay the night.

The hike was a medium difficulty level, with steady inclines on both days. As some of our party were inexperienced hikers, they were able to ride the horses when needed.

The scenery itself is some of the best we've ever seen (and we've been to Nepal, Canada, Switzerland). Jaw-dropping vistas around every corners, crossing rushing rivers, passing through green and verdant valleys. On top of this, there were the lakes, each of which were noticeably different to the other (there are 7 in total), and all breathtakingly beautiful.

As we started our trip in late April, we were the first tourists of the season. The isolation from fellow travellers added to the sense of adventure, and we were alone in the park apart from local horseman and mushroom pickers. In May, we're told that the alpine jailoos (fields) spring flowers in full and spectacular bloom. Later in the year, many more routes open that are blocked by snow in April. Temperatures in April, however, were very tolerable at about 15 degrees. Perfect for walking.

Our third night was spent in the pretty village of Arkyt in a small homestay which is also a working farm. There's a little shop in the village where you can buy some basic supplies (turn right out homestay, past bridge on your right and its on your left)

It's worth noting that during the trek we were fed wonderfully, both in the homestays and the picnics for lunch. We bought our own supplies but they were never needed.

Following our trek our driver took us on the 11 hour drive to Bishkek. The drive was absolutely spectacular, going through mile after mile of mountain pass with untouched snow. The 11 hours absolutely flew by as we were continually staring out the window admiring the views.

In all, we all agreed that doing this trek was one of the best things the three of us have ever done.

If you come to Kyrgyzstan and going to visit Southern part of Kyrgyzstan, the first place you have to visit is Sary-Chelek lake. This place is highly protected by the government, because of its floras and faunas. When we went there with classmates, we couldn't stay by the lake overnight. We camped in the village Arkyt which is very close to Sary-Chelek. The lake is beautiful and so green. You need to go there by a reliable car. Better go there with a driver. We were amazed. I will definitely return there one day.

Amazing horse riding trails topped by a super refreshing swim in the crater lake. Very friendly local population, pristine nature in the remotest landmass of the world away from the oceans.

Sary-Chelek is beautiful mountain lake and one of interesting places in Jalal Abad region. The water of lake is clear, full of fish. Hills around create beautiful sceneries and cool opportunities for hiking.

If you want to make the trip to lake worth of the time, plan to spend two days near lake or in the last village. Visit the lake and hike to one of the hills.

Swimming is officially banned, but locals jump into the water and play on the banks.

It takes approximately 2-3 hours of ride to get from Tash-Komur to the main gate of national park and then 40 minutes to the lake.

Visitors are expected to leave the lake in the evening, 6pm.
