We stopped here early in the morning just after arriving. There were restrooms and a platform to walk on. We saw some geothermal activity later on in the ring road, but these were nice to see, had a contrasting background, and you didn’t get your shoes nearly as dirty. It’s a great quick stop.

An interesting geothermal area to visit, especially if you've never been to one. Great colors, and well-maintained paths to walk around. There's a similar - yet different - area near Mývatn lake. If you've spent significant amount of time in Yellowstone, you may not be as impressed, bit it's still worth stopping by, in my opinion. Keep in mind that the steam released from the vents contains sulfuric compounds, so the air in the area has a strong characteristic smell.

We have been to a couple of these before and this one had great reviews so we added it as a quick stop off to our itinerary and we are glad we did. It was such a lovely place and really pretty in it's own way, with well created pathways and viewing spots around the hot springs. It wasn't too crowded and we were able to get great photos. Stunning scenery on the way to it also! I think we spent 20-30 minutes here and was worth the stop. If you have time, do stop off here!

This place is easily accessible by car with free parking and free use of WC. A couple of picnic tables facilitate people who want to picnic over there. It is a nice place to see interesting geothermal features against scenic background. It is of lesser scale comparing to the geyser area in the golden circle but a lot closer to Reykjavík. 20-30 minutes are good enough although you can opt to ascend further for views.

Now this is a stunning place you can't miss! The colors of the stone and ground against the bright blue sky and green grass. Best place for some thermal photos! Take your time and explore. We spent around 45minutes here just taking it in.

Worth a drive here. We enjoyed more than geysers on golden circle. Unexpected and impressive boardwalked route. And such a great drive to get here. Underrated and we only belated discovered it. Make sure you visit

This was our first ever visit to Geothermal area of our lifetime so it was definitely a WOW place. Lots of Sulpher to smell yet it was beautiful. As you walk thru this area, don't miss the Hike to the small mountain (be careful though, it can be slippery) and there is Geothermal areas on the mountain as well. We did full circle in this area and stopped by few places. Take a look at the map URL below and make note of the points on the map.

If you've got a car, this place is about 20 minutes from Reykjavik and makes a good start to a day tour of the Peninsula. Head then to the Bridge Between Continents, Grindavik Harbour cafe, and Gunnehver Springs. A great day away from the crowds and no fighting/racing the tourist buses.
Ideally you need a 4x4, but we went in May when the weather was biting cold but dry and sunny, so the dirt road was in good nick and we took it easy. It's like driving through a lunar landscape. With gorgeous blue lakes to look at. There's a good viewpoint over the main lake before you get to Seltun.
Seltun has a decent sized car park. It's free. If you get there early-ish it should be quiet. I was pretty much the only one there at about 10:00, but a small bus turned up before I left.
You pretty much follow one path round in a circle. It's mainly a wooden walkway and pretty flat for the start. Even if you can't manage steps, you'll see most of the steam pools and bubbling mud before you get that far. With no-one in your way you could do the walk in less than 30 minutes including time for photos.
It isn't as spectacular as Geysir, but it's a lot less touristic and the hairy ride and lack of signage on the way almost makes you feel like you've found somewhere special that lots of others will miss out on. If you've got a car and the time, do it.

I discovered this place by accident, hadn't even seen it mentioned anywhere. Since it was so close to Reykjavik, I thought I'd check it out. Great site, and totally deserted! You might be as lucky as I was, and have the place entirely to yourself.
The road is paved when you first get on it, but there are several sections that are gravel, and in a couple places it's really, really steep. I did not have a 4x4, just a small rental car, but I've driven on gravel roads before so I wasn't worried. If you're a city person with no experience on this kind of road, you might be better off hiring someone to take you.
First you get to Lake Kleifarvatn, which is an unbelievable shade of blue, especially against the brown hills. The beaches around the lake are black sand, another striking contrast. I imagine that in summer this is a popular destination because it's only about 20 miles from Reykjavik.
The hot springs/mud pits are incredible, and unlike in the US, where such things would be roped off to keep everyone a safe distance away, you can walk right up to these and practically fall in them if you're not careful. There are signs warning you of the dangers, but you're expected to use caution and behave responsibly. The smell is overpowering (I held my breath as I walked through the thickest steam).
No services here, not even a WC, but no tour buses either. A real hidden gem. Glad I discovered it!

Strolled around the boardwalk amongst the colourful bubbling hot pots. It was pretty good but not as extensive as other geothermal areas we have seen. We did not attempt the walk up the hill due to the path being quite muddy after a rainfall. Also, go across the road and check out that hot pot. I would not go more than an hour out of my way to see this.

disfruta!!! Islandia es increíble!! 😀😀

Where exactly is Krysuvik-Seltun form the Blue lagoon? How would I get there with no transportation at my disposal?

We had our own car, directions as for last post, but there were a number of tours visiting this site.

hi,
I am traveling to Iceland in October but I am preparing itinerary on my own. I am traveling with my partner, my daughter and our parents. My partner's mum is 82yrs old so I was wondering if Krysuvik-Seltun may be difficult for her to walk there. don't take me wrong, she is very fit and she even drives her car on her own but I am just asking in case there might be some extraordinary parts of the Krysuvik-Seltun where someone who've been there would consider as 'not too good' for her.
many thanks for all your help

We were there maybe an hour. There are also horses across the street and beautiful black sand beaches nearby, so add maybe another hour for the time we spent there.
