About
The Bridge between continents is a small footbridge over a major fissure which provides clear evidence of the presence of a diverging plate margin. The bridge was built as a symbol for the connection between Eurasian and North America tectonic plates.

- gringottsgoblin366 contributionsInstagram RiftLook it is a cute idea. Someone found a bit of a rift near Reykjavik and plonked a bridge over it to make the point that Iceland is split by the mid Atlantic ridge. Enjoy it for what it is .. a bit of fun. You could have done this anywhere between here and Thingvellir as the entire zone is the rift. If we are being precise the rift is constantly expanding at around 2.5cm rate of spread per year. It was in the Snaefellsnes peninsular around 6-7 million years ago and today there are two zones, one here in Reykjanes and another that is further east that runs beneath Eyjaffallajokull and Katla and both zones join somewhere in the north of Vatnajokull. So on this basis Reykjavik is definitely on the western or North American plate and Vik is definitely on the eastern Eurasian plate and this area is actually on a micro plate caught between the two fracture zones in a sort of micro continent (actually a teeny little sliver between America and Eurasia). Enough of the Geology already. The bridge is a bit of fun. Take a few photos and use it as an instagram moment. That’s what it is intended for. Have fun but it’s not that special.Visited April 2023Travelled with familyWritten April 10, 2023
- ChiiliDavis, California641 contributionsAmazing to walk between two tectonic plates.Love visiting here as Iceland is between two tectonic plates of EuroAsia and North America. The plates are getting wider apart from each other making the Atlantic Ocean larger. Great walk learning about this. You walk the bridge from the EuroAsia side to the North American.Visited June 2023Written June 3, 2023
- Avux99Cheshire, United Kingdom599 contributionsBridge between continentsIt’s cheesy & doesn’t show off the continental rift off as well as Thingvellir does. That said, I beat what Phil Collins did at Live Aid all those years ago because I played both sides of the Atlantic in one minute so easily beat his one day effort. I probably sang better than him too to be fair even though I’m tone deaf.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten September 12, 2023

The parking is easy to access, no fee to visit. Wish the weather had been nicer, we could have spent more time here!Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten November 10, 2023

It was alright. Nothing truly special to see but it was just a cool little attraction that me and my wife were on opposite continents while standing one each side of the bridge. From the parking lot it’s a very short walk and easy to get to.

Well, the place is far from being impressive and looks like a tourist gimmick attraction. It is far from being a must in Iceland that has s many real sites to offer.

Was a pretty cool attraction. It’s a quick visit to see the borders of two countries and the views are pretty impressive. Pretty close to the airport.

The site and parking are free, the path is easy, but it is super exciting. It is more the idea that you must have been there. You see the rift between the tectonical plates very well, so you can stand exactly between the two continents. I had read online that if you passed the bridge, you would get a certificate, but that is no longer the case.

Not much to say about this place and not much to see other than the symbolic divide between tectonic plates. Might as well stop if you’ve got time.

The bridge is at the point where the North American and Eurasian Tectonic Plates meet. It is therefore of great geological importance. There are some well documented panels that add to the interest but no crevices or other features that explain how momentous a place this could be.

Is there a tour from Reykjavik?

I am not sure but it may form part of a bigger tour as by itself it would not be worth it

we will have a 5 hour layover in KEF and was wondering if it is possible to rent a car or take a taxi to this bridge and walk around without doing a tour?

Be prepared, a taxi is extremely expensive, just going 7km set me back almost €30. It may be cheaper to see if there is a tour from the airport or if you can rent and drop a car for partial day.

anyone know any tours or ways to see this? the tour on viator starts at 9am. we arrive at 1pm in January and would love to see this
The easiest way to the "bridge" is to take a Taxi

We have booked a rental car. How far away from Highway #425 is the Bridge Between Continents?

It is on 425, about 10 minutes from the airport. Its a couple miles before the Reykjanes Lighthouse coming from the airport. There is no large landmark. Look for the "points of interest" sign. (The one that sorta looks like a 4 leaf clover).
We just did 10 days around the island never ever got lost (in snow, rain, sleet, wind, and small amount of sun! Get yourself the Iceland Road Guide and Iceland Road Guide (Nordic Traveler). I hope this helps and have a wonderful trip!!!!

I will be landing at 0430 at KEF at the end of January and expect to be through customs (no bags checked) and at rental car pickup before 6am. Would it be worth it to drive to the bridge before the blue lagoon or will it be too dark?

Are you able to take a bus from Reykavik to the "Bridge Between the Two Continents"? Thanks for any information of how to get there.

You really want a bus that is part of a tour of several spots in this area. You could rent a car and do it by yourself but you would miss some of the local flavor provided by the tour person.

Hi- I'm arriving from the airport at about 2 on a Thursday and rather than go straight to Reykjavik was wonder if there was an easy way to get picked up at the airport and see this then go to Reykjavik?

How far of drive is this from Blue Lagoon? Thinking of driving from the airport then to the Bridge between continents and then to Blue Lagoon. Google maps says its 45 KM and only 45 minutes. Is that an accurate driving time?

I think we did it a good bit quicker than that. 20-25 minute from the airport. Then the same onto the blue lagoon
Make sure you have blue lagoon booked
