This area is just outside the town of Barrika and there’s a large car park and cafe which was full of bikers when we visited on a busy Saturday early March. It was quite windy but not cold and so I took a walk down the the view point and noticed some steep stone steps winding down to the beach - surfers were walking down barefoot and so thought it must be ok as I was wearing hiking boots! From the viewpoint you get a real feel of the dramatic landscape, especially in the Bilbao direction - long lines of rocks protrude into the sea and it was interesting watching surfers navigate them. I counted 199 steps down before the way was barred due to a length of dangerous planking about 3/4 of the way down - noticed people were negotiating this stretch by climbing over the low wall and walking down the concrete water run off - so I followed suit. It’s worth the effort to get to the bottom (there are more steps) - and you can walk across the rocks if you so wish. Walking back up the steps at pace I had throat burn from exhaustion so you may need to think before taking the trail - the majority of visitors by far (would say over 95%) did not make the attempt. However, even at my age I have a motto - if it’s there to be climbed/climb it!!

the beautiful Palya Barrika or whatever it is called, given the different names found on site and online, is a spectacle of nature with rocks that jut out into the sea where surfers find their ideal place,
