I went with my mom this past weekend. The weather was pretty bad, just slightly above 40 degrees Fahrenheit, and alternating between raining lightly and raining heavily. It wasn't clear to me how good of an idea it would be to go in this weather, and it turned out not to be a great idea. Some of the museum is... More

My wife and I visited the museum in conjunction with the C&NWHS Meet in Rockford, Illinois. We were greeted with all the Chicago and North Western items in their collection out and about. There is a down and back train ride, with fully functioning antique signals along the way. They even have a pair of wig-wags that operate! Very nice... More

Until the end of May you can get in free on weekdays, but there's only a dozen or so engines to see along with their cars. The barns aren't open until Memorial day weekend. Then it's 10.00 per adult to get in. They also have a nice looking restaurant on the property. Be prepared to walk, a lot!

As a train buff, I always like coming here. This time is no different. It is an impressive attraction, as this museum is mostly run by volunteers. Usually you can ride on an old train or trolley from May through September on weekends and some weekends you can ride on a steamy. There are real train engines on display and... More

By chance we noticed online that the museum gave rides on Sundays only in April, so we headed over there on Easter Sunday. It was quiet, but the volunteers still turned up and got their electric tram running which was fun. It was a 5 mile up and back ride to the end of the line both ways (5 miles... More

See the Largest Vintage railroad available for riding as well as viewing for the whole family. Spend a day in Union at the IL RR Museum and you will never forget the experience. Volunteers acquire and rebuild the trains right on the property. They also maintain and run the trains on special days during the summer, fall and December. There... More

I've been visiting the Illinois Railway Museum for years now. If you love trains, like I do, this place is paradise. There are nine 'barns' full of various engines and cars. One of my favorites is Barn 9, which houses the steam locomotives. I love those! There are also exhibits outside--such as an el platform. There's an old station full... More

A terrific place to take the kids. Reasonable admission fee, easy free parking. The train rides are awesome for young and old. Great memories come back for the seniors and are fun and a learning experience for the kids.

My family and I have been sustaining family members of Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) (irm.org) for many years. I am a 'steam head' (a person who revels in the sights, smells and thrills of riding the rails on and helping others learn about the 'old time' mode of travel afforded by railroad travel of yesteryear); so much so that when...
