We tried visiting. Checked the website which said it was open. Called the information phone number where a recording said it was open. Drove out of the way to visit this park specifically (40 min extra just for this) only to initially find that the main entrance road was closed for repair. Thought it was odd that this wasn't mentioned... More

No as many people as at nearby Starved Rock park, nice waterfall, and views all over the place! Fall colors and pleasant paths throughout the valley made a perfect trip for our family with 2 kids.

My husband and I visited the last weekend of October. We had originally wanted to see Starved Rock, but many people told us that the waterfalls weren't flowing that weekend. We tried our luck at Matthiessen, and the waterfalls were aplenty! Gushing even! We got soaked traversing the lower trails, but it was worth every second! Absolutely beautiful scenery and... More

We ended up here after finding Starved Rock to be overrun with humans. This place was packed but were able to find parking in the main lot. Bathrooms were clean and located right at the parking lot. Trails were well marked, but know that what does down must go up. There are lots of stairs :)

After the better part of a day hiking Starved Rock, we decided to try something a little different and head to Mattheissen State Park for a late afternoon hike. Fortunately, I think we were late enough that some people were leaving because the parking lot was pretty small and the overflow lot was the kind of hike you didn't come... More

I highly recommend Matthiessen if you are looking for beautiful, peaceful hiking! Matthiessen State Park is a great place to hike! My husband and I were on our way to Starved Rock, but it was at capacity so we stopped at one of the smaller local visitor centers where we were presented with several other near by options and we... After two (2) days of hiking at Starved Rock, we went to this state park for a change. It's approximately 10 - 15 minutes away from Starved Rock so if the crowd at Starved Rock is too much for you, get in the car and head on over. The paths are more "natural" than those at Starved Rock so good... More
