Traffic noise fades away as you start to hike and it feels like you are much farther form Bloomington than a 15 minute drive.Very popular trail with trail runners and hikers, so it can be busy at times, but this narrow trail takes you up and down hills and through dense woodlands, crossing small streams and little waterfalls. Lots of... More

This hiking trail is not far from town and is excellent for exercise, up hill and down, and can be as many or as few miles as you like by taking various turns. Can be busy at times. Our Black Lab loves it!

This trail showcases all of the best features of the Hoosier National forest; ridges, hollows, and Monroe Lake, all in one well-designed hike. It's about a 7-mile loop, with an optional shortcut that cuts the mileage down a bit. It's my favorite hike to show out-of-town friends how beautiful southern Indiana is!

If visiting Bloomington this is a nice change of pace. Well marked, wooded and hilly, offers several alternatives depending on how long you want to hike.

The trailhead is located right next to the back parking lot of the DNR on 446. The trail is well marked, and just the right amount of hills for a good workout, some streams to cross, but not too difficult. If you take the longest route, you will come to Lake Monroe. There are different distances you can go because... More

I was torn between 4 stars and 5 stars for this rating. I went with 4 stars because for a area that abuts Lake Monroe, the trail provides only very brief glimpses of the lake and does not get close to the water. That said, this is a beautiful, fairly hilly, woods hike and very close to Bloomington. The loop... More

Lots of hills to get you warmed up, beautiful trees and views of Lake Monroe. The trail is behind the Indiana Conservation Officer Headquarter before you drive into the Paynetown SRA. Trail junctions are well marked with a 'You are Here' type map - very helpful. While hiking, a coyote and I almost bumped into each other - don't worry,... More

There are a few options to make this trail longer or shorter and we really enjoy the views - both wooded and then lakeside as the trail winds around the edge of the lake. Very nice and well-marked. Parking is easy (behind conservation office) and it is moderate in difficulty.

Pate Hollow is a nice 7.7 mile loop trail just 15 minutes from downtown Bloomington. The trail is well marked and easy to access. The trail head starts in the parking lot of the DNR station on SR 144. Check out the trail map here: http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5287875.pdf. The full trail is nice, taking you out to Lake Monroe and across several... More
