The Friday after Thanksgiving we decided to go to the Indiana Historical Society-my parents have a membership here-a very good idea because the exhibits change regularly and some of the standing exhibits like the Cole Porter Music Room are always a welcome respite with talented young crooners recreating Mr. Porter's tunes. On this trip we stumbled upon the Christmas Tree... More

Gorgeous interior, decent snack bar downstairs, and above all, very interesting exhibitions. Read up on the place. The festival of trees in the Christmas season is a blast. Cole Porter room is fascinating and there is a vocalist who will sing you favorite song. Living exhibitions reproduce famous people and events of bygone eras staffed with in-consume actors who will... More

We arrived when the museum opened at 10:00 the day after Thanksgiving. We really enjoyed our visit. This is a beautiful facility in a really neat location on the canal. The festival of trees is really neat. We had a hard time choosing our favorite 3 to vote for. The You are There experiences are so neat. The actors playing... More

Went to the museum to see the Festival of trees but enjoyed the rest of the museum as well. Especially enjoyed the Cole Porter room and the "You were there" experiences. If you need to get lunch while you are there the Starlight Cafe was great!

We visited the IHS today to experience the Festival of Christmas Trees. There were 72 trees decorated to different themes by various businesses and organizations. The trees are exhibited on 4 floors: the Canal, Main, 2 and 4 levels with both stair and elevator access. It took us about 1 1/2 hours to see them all. We enjoyed it a... More

The You Are There exhibit about Col. Eli Lilly and the early days of the Eli Lilly Company is a wonderful exhibit. These live recreations of photographs allow the visitor to step into an historical situation and to actually talk with and ask questions of the re-enactors. This is great for visitors of all ages.

This trail is a great idea as it gets you out for a safe walk and you can view different parts of downtown. Indianapolis is a fun city to explore.

You will definitely be pleasantly surprised at the offerings of this fine museum located in the heart of Indianapolis right next to the canal and near hotels. The history of Indiana is so much more than I imagined and they do a great job of bringing it to life. The building is absolutely well done and beautiful outside and inside... More

It's always good to visit museums and learn about the culture and people that lived there. I also had the pleasure of be entertained by a young man named Josiah. He was singing Cole Porter songs in a room that was set up just like Cole would be there.

Please beware : this is a cute small series of vignettes, but because of its placement on the canal and the size of the building, we thought we were seeing Indiana's state history museum. Obviously we were mistaken, and really disappointed.
