Guide in ticket office gave us coffee and dates, explained the damage that precluded yours (ceiling has collapsed and one staircase, and then directed us to Al Hazm fort as a good alternative. Given the closure, we were pleased with his assistance; it offset the disappointment. But CHECK before you go that it is open!

Closed, and Rustaq was a super deserted town with no people on the streets. Almost a ghost town. We turned around without even getting food (everything was closed) and are mad that we did a 2 hour detour for this

This is a great fort and well worth a visit. The fort is pretty well preserved and, whilst it will have undoubtedly have undergone a level of restoration works, it hasn’t been enhanced or embellished in any way which gives it a truly authentic feel. You’re given free reign to wander just about anywhere and the fort is a myriad of rooms, passageways and staircases that make for great hour or so of exploration. Entry is 500 baisa (half a rial).

Rustaq fort is a place i would recommend for anyone visit rustaq. Historical building which shows how great were the Omani civilisation .

This fort costs 500 baisal to visit and should take between 1 and 2 hours to cover. It’s got a great cannon tower but like most forts a little lacking in broader information. Worth doing as part of the Rustaq loop but maybe surpassed by Nakhal and Al Hazm.

The reception at the castle was so friendly and interactive. We were provided with auro tour guide machines which were absolutely great. The man on the desk asked us some questions and said see if we can find the answers. Brilliant.

A very large fort both in the size of the main structure itself and in the ground area it covers. The outer wall encloses a large courtyard and additional ground around the fort. The fort itself is a maze of walkways, stairs and ramparts leading to different areas. It really is a huge fully restored building. Rooms are marked in English indicating their use, kitchen, prison, food store etc but no further information or description is available. A good combination would be Rustaq fort for its imposing military presence with 25km away Al Hazm fort which is much smaller but furnished and available with full historic information.

The entry fee has to be paid by credit or debit card. Strange and unhelpful when the 1R entry for two people is outweighed by the 2R my UK bank charges for using a card outside the EU.

Part of an afternoon trip around the Rustaq Loop. Very interesting and always fascinating how it was built to this scale with the technology available at the time.

Al Rustaq castle is located in Alrustaq historical town in The Sultanate of Oman, the fort itself is a beautiful historical architecture landmark that should be seen though there are so many attractions nearby to see & historical ruins to discover

Nice fort but no room has really been set-up like it's the old days so if you want to see more you might hit other forts like new Nizwa.
If it's on your way, you can stop for a quick visit but if it's your 5th fort then you might pass if you're time poor.
