We stopped here while on a bike trip. it is a nice place to have a refreshing drink ad small snack. You can enjoy the nice outside seating with the view of the fortress and the river.

Someone in our family did our family tree and a branch lived in this fort in the 17th Century. The museum exhibition inside the fort is very professional and interesting but if you can't read Flemish (or Dutch) you'll need a guide. Also worth visiting the local town Doel with its 400 yr old windmill and "ghost town" which is... More

taken here by a local - best visited by car. Interesting, but only Dutch sign boards. Quiet and rural type location.

Two fortresses were built by the Dutch around 1585, when the Spaniards occupied Antwerp. The 2 fortresses remained Dutch for 200 years, and were instrumental in controlling the traffic of ships over the Schelde river. They levied toll, very much to the benefit of their possessors.
