If this is supposed to be a wildlife sanctuary then the surrounding area should be cleaned up.
We were on a tour and this was a stop to see flamingos.
Dont rely on seeing many or even any. Wildlife is wild so no guarantees. We cant deny we saw some but in the distance and too far to be a spectacle.
Take binoculars of you have them.
The viewing platform has a maximum of 10 people at a time which was only pointed out by one of our group not our leader! Most of the time I expect there will only be one or two cars at a time so no problem.
A stop on the way to or from somewhere else not a destination.
Its free so nothing to lose.

We stayed nearby . Therefore, we passed by the Flamingo Sanctuary several times during our stay in CuraƧao.
Flamingos are beautiful. Parking by the roadside is relatively easy and straightforward.
Iām not sure if itās worth it to take a big detour/trip to visit the Flamingo Sanctuary. However, in my opinion, is a nice sight if youāre in the area.

Monday 18th April we were driving around exploring the northwestern side of the Island.
Having just passed the Wllliwood sign, along
Weg Naar St Willibrordus, we stopped at a small road parking spot along side this viewpoint.
As this region is known for flamingos we were hoping to see some, a good few.
There was a notice, across the footbridge leading to the viewing platform, it advised visitors not to use the bridge and keep off. It soon became apparent why, the bridge was unsafe and rotting away.
A small pathway, at the side of the bridge led us down on to the mud flats. Disappointingly we only saw 4 flamingos in a cluster in the distance and an egret.
Entry to the viewing platform at the end of the footbridge was also prohibited due to structural safety.
We did walk about the flats for a bit enjoying the scenery.
Another disappointing aspect was the amount of litter about the place.

We took two attempts to watch the flamingos. As I secretely prefer other birds on Curacaco like the inseparables or pelicans, I wasn't too much disappointed that the flamingos preferred to stay in the background. Obvisiously it depends on the daytime wether you can watch them.
Our second attempt at the late afternoon was more successful than at midday. But if you are already happy to discover some pink points in the background at a place that you are not allowed to enter, go ahead and take a photo with your cell phone. So you can cross this point off your bucket list even during daytime. Or buy any flamingo merch at one of the tourist shops.
If you are more ambitious come back with your camera with a telephoto lens.

We stopped on the way to Shete Boka Park and it was a good place to stretch the legs. Very barren landscape, so desert like. We did see some flamingos napping in the way distance, which was cool, but not spectacular. Not worth an out of the way stop, by take a few minutes to stop on the way to another destination.

Nice road stop. Birds are far enough away that they are not easily ruffled by lots of tourists taking pictures. It is quite hot on the flats so take a hat and maybe water. It is maybe a 20 min stop.

First time I got to see wild flamingo's. We happened on this place by chance and pulled over on the side of the road to get out and walk along the water to watch the birds. If you have a good camera with zoom, bring it! My phone couldn't get a good close up shot of the birds. Really cool experience if you're in the area.

Short stop for a photo opportunity a the flamingo santuary. Were about 30 flamingos feeding when were arrived. They have an elevated plateform for taking pictures.

We came here as the sun was setting, which made for some great pictures. We were warned, though, it is not the best of areas and there are a lot of break-ins to cars as seen by all the glass on the ground. Our guide even told us stories of his friends having their car being broken into.
There are dirt trails to walk on and the area is quite scenic. At the time we were there, there were only a handful of flamingos in the water and quite a distance away. Even with our 35X zoom lens, they were hard to capture.
If you are in the area, I would definitely say to stop by and check it out. Just make sure you take all your valuables with you.

We visited the flamingo sanctuary twice. The first time everything was great but there weren't that many flamingos. We stopped by on the way back from Playa Porto Marie. The second time we went at around 6:30p just to see if we could get a better shot at seeing more flamingos. We'd just left Playa Cas Abao and since we'd already seen the flamingos we quickly jumped out of the car just to snap a few more pictures. Unfortunately, we made the stupid mistake of leaving a beach bag in the back seat of the car in plain sight. We just got careless because we thought it would be such a quick stop. Luckily, we saw more flamingos this time; however, when we returned to our car 10-15 mins later , the back car window had been smashed-in and the beach bag was gone. I would encourage everyone to go see the flamingos because it is a pretty cool spot and since we went during the dry season there was no mud and you could walk extensively to get closer to them. Nevertheless, DO NOT leave anything in the car. It is a VERY expensive repair. The thieves didn't get much but in the end we had to pay a lot to AVIS to fix the rental; we feel like we got robbed twice. We are sure that there are people watching and waiting until a tourist leaves the car to go and check and see if they left anything inside. After we filed the police report, the police told us that many car robberies happen at the Jan Kok salt flats. Long story short: visit the flamingos, leave nothing in the car, either take it with you or put it out of sight in the trunk.

Hi, Traci. What would you like to know about this attraction? we will be stopping at the port while on a cruise. how do we set something up to visit the flamingo sanctuary?
Written December 27, 2018
Best way is to get a taxi to take you. It's a pretty quick stop along the road, with little shade. Unless you want to do a full day or half day tour like we did with yellow tours

From the cruise ship you need to go west an follow directions Sint Willibrodus. Best is to combine it with a visit to one of the beaches like Playa Porto Marie which has a restaurant, or Daaibooi that has more something like a snackbar. Near the Salina Jan Kok is also a landhouse you can visit, and with a view on the Saline is a local minimarket where you can also enjoy a coffee or a lunch.
Nice about St. Willibrordus is that you can walk over the dikes. The birds also happen to fourage in Boca St. Michel or the Salina of Jan Thiel
